Federal prosecutors in Virginia have shut down one of the world’s largest file-sharing sites, link-removed.com, and charged its founder and others with violating piracy laws.

Workers indicted at one of world

looks like while the world was fighting for SOPA. they were fighting for their own survival. and no one noticed.

Gosh, it happened so quickly, and I thought BSNL was having issues 😕

Seven individuals and two corporations have been charged in the United States with running an international organized criminal enterprise allegedly responsible for massive worldwide online piracy of numerous types of copyrighted works through link-removed.com and other related sites, generating more than $175 million in criminal proceeds and causing more than half a billion dollars in harm to copyright owners, the U.S. Justice Department and FBI announced today.

This action is among the largest criminal copyright cases ever brought by the United States and directly targets the misuse of a public content storage and distribution site to commit and facilitate intellectual property crime.

Finn Batato, 38, a citizen and resident of Germany, who is the chief marketing officer;
Julius Bencko, 35, a citizen and resident of Slovakia, who is the graphic designer;
Sven Echternach, 39, a citizen and resident of Germany, who is the head of business development;
Mathias Ortmann, 40, a citizen of Germany and resident of both Germany and Hong Kong, who is the chief technical officer, co-founder and director;
Andrus Nomm, 32, a citizen of Estonia and resident of both Turkey and Estonia, who is a software programmer and head of the development software division;
Bram van der Kolk, aka Bramos, 29, a Dutch citizen and resident of both the Netherlands and New Zealand, who oversees programming and the underlying network structure for the Mega conspiracy websites.

Bads news...will miss the streaming movies and Tv shows of Megavideo. There are 100's of other alternatives and i am sure many new ones will come up as well, but Megavideo was quality with decent speeds.RIP link-removed, a battle may have been lost but the war will continue!

You beat me to it. I was just about to post the same. Interesting. All of their sites have been taken down. But then they were going a bit too much over the line and it was not fair usage policy anymore in megavideo. They allowed full shows and movies and people were using them for piracy. So, not that bad I suppose as it was against fair usage and was not just clips etc. but full shows and movies openly.

There is a massive difference between SOPA and blatant copyright infringement like Megavideo network was doing. SOPA does not allow any legal process or takedown notice for webmasters. For example, in SOPA if any person in this forum publishes an article or posts a photo which any of the big bullies think is copyright then they can directly take off your sites WITHOUT ANY DMCA TAKEDOWN NOTICE, WARNING OR DUE PROCESS. And the big bullies think a lot of things to be copyright. One of the American bullies was even trying to make Yoga their copyright until Indian protested. They make treadmarks out of thin air too with corporate lobbying money. So, both are vastly different. Megavideo etc. disregarded DMCA notices and never took down any copyrighted video and so, this is logical. But SOPA is not only illogical but unethical.

ok. i might be wrong. but i am pretty sure that link-removed was in compliance with the DMCA laws. they offered a mechanism to file a complaint and complied with it. that is what the laws are today.

it was universal which was trying to act as a big brother taking down their videos from youtube etc etc.

last i heard they had filed a lawsuit against universal.

link-removed.com was working on the same concept as youtube.

while i understand that link-removed was one of the most popular ways to get access to pirated media. but the fact remains, as long as they were complying with DMCA, they were not violating any laws.

you do realize DMCA is an American law and binding only only on American hosting ans servers, link-removed is a HK based and registered company, link-removed got taken down cause of magabox, the upcoming service which would have allowed artists to retain 90% of earnings , from RIAA they get 5% !!!, mega was already suing UMG over that youtube fiasco , the only US connection they had was 2 servers in VA, and since when did DMCA become a criminal statute !! yesterday you witnessed 1st protest on internet , get ready for 1st war on internet now , a fire sale assault is already on on all us gov sites . it is time to get all yanks officials off the web and let them live in their own world , the world or internet will or does not run on American laws.

Dotcom is founder, former CEO and current chief innovation officer of link-removed.

The arrest was carried out by the Organised & Financial Crime Agency New Zealand and police following a "mutual legal assistance request from the US to arrest individuals for the purpose of extradition".

"The FBI contacted New Zealand police in early 2011 with a request to assist with their investigation into the 'Mega Conspiracy'," says Det Insp Grant Wormald.

"We were happy to provide this assistance. Staff from OFCANZ and New Zealand police have worked with the US authorities over recent months to effect today's successful operation.

"All the accused have been indicted in the United States. We will continue to work with the US authorities to assist with the extradition proceedings."

So basically what is happening is that USA is able to extradite people from other countries for copyright violation (MPAA and RIAA). But India cannot do the same for terrorists.

Funny world we are living in.

----------

how would you feel if you are extradited by american law authorities for copyright violation here from india? indian government could very well sign a similar deal with america in return for financial gains?

An indictment unsealed today by the Department of Justice claims that link-removed has caused the entertainment industries more than $500 million in lost revenue and generated $175 million “in criminal proceeds.”Two corporations – link-removed Limited and Vestor Limited – were indicted by a grand jury in the Eastern District of Virginia on January 5th, 2012, and charged with “engaging in a racketeering conspiracy, conspiring to commit copyright infringement, conspiring to commit money laundering and two substantive counts of criminal copyright infringement.”
Today, the authorities executed in excess of 20 search warrants in the United States and eight other countries.
Data centers in the Netherlands, Canada and Washington housing link-removed’s equipment were raided. In an apparent reference to the latter location, a source has just informed TorrentFreak that the FBI are currently detaining everyone at the ISP Cogent Communications’ headquarters in Washington DC, in connection with a Mega-related search warrant.
