I think religion is just an excuse - they seem more interested in stifling dissent against the government or the ruling party. This court order, like the Reliance Entertainment one, was probably passed by judges who have no understanding of the issue, or who are in the pockets of big politicians.

Right on the Spot buddy! Perfect. You got it.
We in here, we're discussing religion, caste, some say explicit materials. It's Nothing - zlitch!.
Have we thought when in last 6 months - 1 year we had a communal violence/agitation/hot news of any sort because of some social n/w site?
I don't think we'd find anything.

See the same thing in slight different perspective - agitation and support for Anna, specially among students & younger citizens were majorly thru social n/w sites. We have to accept that Anna's movement in 2011 did cause a little disturbance to our 'well structured' govt. Hence, the big guys decided what could be done about this? And they are trying well to cencor our freedom - using the decoy of religion, caste, explicit contents etc etc (... more reasons will come).

Well its not only for religion stuff i guess. Explicit materials too.

Most sensible reply in the entire thread.

Apparently the villain in the whole freedom of speech on the web scene in India.

----------

The Delhi high court on Thursday warned social networking site Facebook India and search engine Google India that websites can be "blocked" like in China if they fail to devise a mechanism to check and remove objectionable material from their web pages.
"Like China, we will block all such websites," Justice Suresh Kait said while asking counsel for Facebook and Google India to develop a mechanism to keep a check and remove "offensive and objectionable" material from their web pages.

BAN the Internet! Let us live in PAASHAAN-YUG!..... When will this old monkeys die?

better option: shut down all isp's and seize all the pc's in this country. why waste time blocking individual sites?? turn india into north korea. kim jong il 2 wud be happy to have company !!!its a disgrace to have such people sitting on high court benches.

Where's freedom of speech? Either our law is terribly flawed or the egoistic elders can't get away with younger generation being free of their clutches.... or Kapil Sibal might have bribed the judges:
HC to Facebook, Google: Remove obscene content or face blocking - The Times of India

Some religions exhibit absolute hypocrisy: they abuse anyone who does not follow them(particularly irreligious folk like me) to the most gory and gruesome effects in hell, yet their poor little egos get hurt when we abuse in return.. well, we all know what religions they are.

We wont build those super bridges and bring in those super fast trains like in China and Yes all those Empty malls and empty cities too.But Our Judges and Politicians want to follow Chinese footsteps in killing freedom of speech and the Internet.

We will see who will get banned..Sites or Govt in general election 2014..Cheers!

It's not like BJP or any other party is going to change this stance... Curbing freedom of speech on the web works for all political parties. It is similar to the whole Jan Lokpal Thingy. Everyone is affected.

Actually, Google and Facebook have the resources to take this all the way to the Supreme Court - and I trust the courts more than the politicians. The SC has regularly come down on the side of free speech throughout the past decades and I think the same thing will happen here.Someone mentioned that India doesn't have the equivalent of the DMCA. I believe it does. And this is what Google responded with in its latest salvo. This is the right time for a case like this to go to the courts and get settled once and for all. We needed the precedent. Luckily the case is against Google/Facebook who can actually stand up and defend themselves rather than against some poor blogger with no resources.

cartoonsagainstcorruption.com is apparently the latest victim...

Aseem Trivedi, a Kanpur-based cartoonist is the latest to be caught up in the push-and-pull over what constitutes free speech and what constitutes material so offensive that no one should see it.

Mr. Trivedi runs a website called www.cartoonsagainstcorruption.com that he says was inspired by Anna Hazare’s anticorruption movement. The portal was recently suspended, following a complaint that it showcased “ugly and obscene” content that mocked the Indian Constitution.

The site was suspended after a complaint to the Mumbai Crime Branch by a Mumbai-based advocate, R.P. Pandey. The complaint stated that “defamatory and derogatory cartoons” were displayed as posters during Mr. Hazare’s hunger strike in Mumbai last week. Noting that the posters were created by Mr. Trivedi and “are believed to be made at the instance of Shri Anna Hazare,” the complaint requested “strict legal action in the matter.” Soon after, Mr. Trivedi’s web portal was banned by “Big Rock,” which hosted his portal. Big Rock didn’t respond to a request for comment.

In an interview with India Real Time, Mr. Pandey said that his complaint targets “select cartoons” which “ridicule the Indian Parliament, the national emblem and the national flag” and “not those which poke fun at Indian politicians.”

well of course the current laws should come to the rescue of the social giants. the problem is sibal who is working on passing new legislation that would make things worse.

courts would have to follow the law of the land. and government is working on creating the laws they need for the curbing of freedom of speech on the web.

The Supreme Court in the past has struck down laws which impinge on the Constitutional right to freedom of expression. Way back in the 70s or 80s it had passed a judgement saying that pre screening of text content was unconstitutional and no law could be brought to implement it.My hopes are high for this case. I want to see the government and all the lunatics who get so easily "offended" smacked down.
