I have a dell vostro 1520 laptop purchased from USA. with it came a vista cd and xp cd,sp3 both for reinstallation. currently i have xp installed on it and it did not ask for the product key. . I plan to sell the laptop with vista installed on it and want to retain the xp cd so that i can install it on my assembled desktop pc.the bottom of the machine has the product key sticker mentioning vista but not xp. is it possible to use the xp cd on my desktop and use the key on the bottom of my laptop to authenticate it? will it be a legal version then? when i install vista on the laptop, do i have to use the same product key? Will it clash and will both be legal since i will be running two machines, one with xp and the other with vista, but with the same product key.

the installation disks that come with dell and other company laptops are OEM editions which are designed to run on the laptop that it comes with. verification is done on the hardware level and that is why no serial key is asked by the installer. from what i know, you are not allowed to run this OEM edition on another machine. and of course... you did not really get the right to use both the operating systems together. you got the right to use either one of them at one point of time. this is what the legal position is. :)

I doubt if you can use the Dell laptop serial on an assembled desktop. From what I know, those serials will only work in Dell laptops or Dell laptops with a sufficiently similar configuration. If I remember correctly, you have to phone Dell support with your Vista key to get the key for XP; then the Vista key is deactivated and you also get a refund. However, that program has probably ended by now.I suggest trying what you want to do yourself before selling the laptop. If it works, good. If not, well you can't even buy XP any more. So you'll have to buy and use Windows 7 or use XP via "other means".

xp is outdated. since they have stopped the updates for Xp . . any new plugholes found in Xp by hackers iun Xp will be left without a patch and this may/will be a big risk for any company.

Technology advances. . although sometimes i resist change . . Change ought to happen.

ofcourse when Vista was launched . .it was shit and i used Xp . .but now that win 7 is launched and its good and better option than Xp . .i gotta use Win 7 :)

I was actually trying to being in shoes of various windows users. You won't believe the number of people who still use Windows XP Home Edition.I never saw Windows XP Home Edition in my life, but when I saw people using it? I was awestruck. It really is not about money, I was in wrong impression. People use it, cuz they just like to use it.
