the D-Link runs dd-wrt and its highly stable btw( last reboot was around 20 days bck). the speed also depends on the distance from the router. when my laptop is in the same room as the router i get around 5-5.5mb/s. but usually they are not in the same room hence the horrible speed. in any case i hardly download thru the laptop 🙂dd-wrt usually beats everything in stability from what i have seen in my limited use.

dd-wrt usually beats everything in stability from what i have seen in my limited use.

The version he has won't run DD-WRT or OpenWRT (see https://broadband.forum/fivenet/74881-fivenet-users-grant-road-tardeo/3/#post604330). Otherwise most of the older versions of that router are pretty decent and still quite highly sought after (it's also great for anyone wanting to set up a public hotspot).
 
@mgcarleyYes the Linksys WRT54G2 I have is running dd-wrt firmware. Security is set to WPA2 Personal AES. My laptop wireless card is Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN. The download speed I get is 2.2 Mb/s in the hub. Laptop is used in the same room to download as the router.Now keeping all these things in mind will a Wireless N 150Mbps router give better speeds than my current one?
 
it will be better than ur current one but only about 50-60% of what u wud get with a wired line. if ur ok with tht then go ahead. but don't forget tht u wud get 5-6mb/s with Netgear/Cisco routers. not the cheap models though.
 

dude from what i have read the new TP-Link is ver3.0 which has no support for dd-wrt. v2.0 had support for dd-wrt. without dd-wrt i woudn't recommend this.if u can push ur budget up by 300-400 rs then i say go for D-Link dir 615. put dd-wrt on it and its one hell of a stable router. wireless N 300mbps. also dlink honors the warranty even after u install dd-wrt. it has detachable antennas in case u want to replace them. u shud find it @ lamington for around 1800-1900. also plz check if the latest router version supports dd-wrt or not.

Really? How'd you get DD-WRT into 2MB? Have they got a lite version out now for the newer models of the WRT54G?

I will be happy if I get speed of atleast 3Mb/s.

My budget for a new router is Rs 1500. Which one would you suggest?

Neither of these routers support either DDWRT or OpenWRT... well, technically the WGR614 does if you get the right version but I'm not sure if the one you'll get from Flipkart will be the right version or not. Also, it can be obtained for less at Lamington Road.

Also, my experiences with TP-Link (albeit an outdoor AP) was less than favourable.

THE D-Link DIR615 IS VERY BAD IF YOU PLAN TO USE BITTORRENT (unless you keep the connection limits VERY low) - see D-Link DIR-615 Connection Loss - Tech Support Guy Forums connection stable but lose internet DIR-655 disconnect wan and wlan under heavy torrent load. Issues with internet connectivity while using bit torrent etc.Why would you even suggest that model? It's complete trash as far as I'm concerned - I've had two of them and both were equally rubbish (one even had custom firmware).

D-Link DIR-615 looks good since its 300Mbps router. But will the latest version fall under dd-wrt?

I think I know someone with this router or a similar model - his one seems to work nicely and gives very nice results. I will ask him about it.
 
i don't know what the latest revision number is. u will have to ask some shopkeeper what the rev. number of the latest model is(i have rev.e3) . then search for the relevant dd-wrt file. if a file is available get the router. i stay away from Linksys coz 1) no dd-wrt. stock linksys firmware is useless. 2) the low end models are no good in terms of range etc. the reviews are also not nice.

he is going to use dd-wrt so no. of open connections can be set higher upto 4096 via gui(Ip filter settings) ( u can set it higher than that thru command line). i have it set @ 4096 and i download through the ethernet port of the router. never had any problem. i download a lot of stuff btw. approx 30-40 gb on weeknds without any reboots. if i don't have problems then i doubt any1 esle is going to have.
the only ppl who complain about D-Link are the ones running the stock firmware which is utter crap. u r completely missing the point that the stock firmware is never going to be used here.
the only reason i m recommending dlink is based on the understanding tht he is going to use dd-wrt.
i wud never touch any sub 5k linksys product with even a 50% discount.

My Linksys WRT54G2 has DD-WRT v24-sp2 (12/07/09) micro-plus.

Also I do not mind if the router does not support dd-wrt. It should just solve my purpose of getting download speed of atleast 3Mb/s.

Going from the suggestions it looks Netgear WGR614 (no draft n)?

Asus also has a couple of models but the power saver mode is what I am worried about.

Got the TP-Link TL-WR740N. It is version 4.20 so no dd-wrt.However, the stock firmware is very impressive. Overall I am satisfied with the router.Getting download speed of 3.5-4 Mbp/s in the hub. Also now I can browse file list of more users than before.
