Only issue will be to have the ethernet cable going to the STB. Currently I have my cable going from a room to my living area.

You can use a Wifi Bridge, not sure if they are readily available in india but i bought it from here: VAP11G IEEE802.11b/g WiFi Bridge - Blue - Free Shipping - DealExtreme
...They are rather easy to configure & the best alternatives to the otherwise messy cable running from one room to another

Else you can also buy a Wireless Repeater from Indian website, Eg: MINI PORTABLE 150mbps WiFi Wireless N AP Repeater Router Access Point Bridge | eBay

Laggy InterfaceCombined price of Broadband+IPTV is somewhat high (though still lower than taking DTH+Broadband separately. but many people dont believe in broadband)Requires you to keep the router on when watching TV (many people have issues with this as well)Needs some basic networking skills to debug on your own (unlike cable TV)Interface is a bit complex and laggyNot advertised properly by Airtelto name a few...

another oversight..in this era of cheap wifi how much would it have cost them to embed a wifi chip in the HD boxes?..but no..probably they will introduce this as a "new feature" in new boxes that they will bring out in the future and a user will again need to shell out $$ to purchase/exchange..BTW u can easily make a bridge if u have a spare router lying around that can run DD-wrt

^ i wonder what is the problem with IPTV why is it not successful in India? I have used it abroad on a copper ADSL connection and it works flawlessly..probably something to do with our poor line conditions

Execution & Marketing is the main problem in India, yes of course badly maintained lines with weak SNR

Providers like BSNL having nationwide coverage deployment capability at least in all major cities outsourced the project to useless vendors like Myway instead of deploying the services on their own & these 3rd party vendors were greatly responsible for the failure. Otherwise IPTV is a less expensive technology to deploy & the possibilities are endless depending the bandwidth available, by Indian standards considering we are mostly on copper infrastructure the average speeds possible would be 10-20 Mbps - which is quiet suitable for Triple Play Services(Phone, Internet & IPTV).
Other private providers like Airtel/Reliance's IPTV really didn't take off very well because of their limited connections/penetration. Another prime reason is also that Broadband penetration in India is very low compared to other countries

DTH on the flip side is very expensive technology to deploy & maintain, including adding new channels - is usually used for last mile connectivity in developed countries. Wired Infrastructure is otherwise the first choice of selection for Consumers & Service Providers alike. Internet Service Providers abroad usually provide bundle offers on Triple Play Services(Phone, Internet & IPTV) - all of the same cable/fiber line which works out economical for consumers & the Provider : Personal Opinion only, Citation required

I checked and do not see ip settings. Is there a way to force an update? Does the update have to do anything with connecting the ethernet cable?

^ The update happens OTA. The ethernet port is enabled only after the update

will it work if i use a usb wifi adapter to connect the box to the internet? i have already set up a wifi network at my place

So is it a phased process? If so area/circle dependent? Who all have got it and when? ^ The update happens OTA. The ethernet port is enabled only after the update

Try manual update

When ur stb is on, close it from the mains without switching off from remote.
After some time switch on stb from mains and when 'please wait initializing' comes on screen, press back button twice and then press 2465. Software will start downloading.

Hhhmmm this is what Tata Sky guys do hah. Nice info pal, i always wanted to find a way for manual update.

BTW i forgot to mention that there could be another department set up by Tata Sky for this service alone. I called TS for some account related info & then casually asked the rep for more info on 'New VOD Service', he initially placed me on hold for sometime & then transferred the call to another dept where they gave all the information + took request to activate the service & also promised a callback from the back end team for the same, no one called back after this but the new service was either ways active the very next morning

Update: The New VOD Service with free movies comes up only when the Ethernet cable is connected & internet is working, else we see the old VOD menu with some 'Comedy' etc clips stored offline on the HDD. *this also means we can now access the old VOD Menu with Charlie Chaplin's, Lucy's comedy clips 'only' when the ethernet cable is disconnected. I also noticed that the transition time for getting the option when we connect the ethernet cable is almost instant without any time lags or the need to restart.
