forget touchpad. it would be hard to find a unit today. and using it with experimental builds is going to be stupid.

playbook would soon get an update that would enable it to run most android apps natively.

though getting the installers might be not so easy.

Is it 3G/4G enabled? what is the inbuilt data modem speed? or you can use in wifi only? Can you attach a data card?

Nope.. The Touchpad is wifi only. No 3G modem. I use my iPhone's personal hotspot for data when I'm out & about.

HTC Flyer @ $300 ... expensive?

For the usage mentioned by OP, Nook Color 8 GB should be a very good choice.
New for $ 198 >> Barnes & Noble Nook Color 8GB, Wi-Fi, 7in - Black! BRAND NEW SEALED | eBay
Used from $ 130.

Advantages:
Best resolution screen in 7" Devices. 1024x600 IPS Multi Touch. Good capable hardware.
Superb Developer Support. Lots of Android Custom ROM's available.

So it despite an E Reader of Barnes & Noble, can be easily converted to a full fledged android tablet by Custom ROMs. Another advantage is that Custom ROM can be booted from SD Card. So you can have your own ROM on SD Card instead of Flashing. No chance of bricking and you can have Dual Boot between original ROM.
