please use a better thread title. cheapest laptop available. seriously? this is largely based on what i have heard. but in the price range you are targeting, HP Pavilion dm1z is supposed to be the best VFM deal available. i could not locate this model on Flipkart, so you would have to look at other places.
 
^ exactly. if all he wants to do is check mail n surf then a tablet is much more sensible option. why lug around a big box weighing a few kilos ?? plus u get a battery life tht is miles better than any laptop can provide.
 
a 20k laptop would be much better than a 20K tablet. most tablets in this range are going to be rather sad in terms of performance and build quality.
 
just realised he needs min 14" so i guess laptop is the way to go. out of the 2 u listed i wud go with toshiba. coz from past experience with toshibas i knw their build quality is superior to most.

It offers the compatability which a laptop can never provide.
 
well since you sit at a distance from the netbook a 14" display on a netbook is pretty close to 10" display on a tablet.

i have not used tablets a lot. i have used a netbook with a 10" display and the web pretty much sucks at this screen size. of course resolution is also important.

i am not against tablets. i am against cheap android based tablets. now that i have used the ipad 2, i can safely say that future is bright. but tablet is not really a replacement for a notebook today. at least not the cheapo ones that are on sale in india.
 
Toshiba 14" laptop mentioned is sturdy. But the processor is quite old.

Lenovo G570 variant mentioned is Celeron B-800 processor ( more recent than T4500/P6100/P6200)
But the best among the G570 variant is with B950 processor.
