It took 15 days and numerous phone calls to the shopkeeper, service center, Zee head office, n number of sales people, technicians to get them to come over to my home and install the DISH TV antennae. DISH TV phone helpdesk standard response was that they don't handle setups and I should talk to the dealer. Dealer said talk to service center. Service center said they're sending the guy and never sent him. This was not the end of it..now another week passed before the maxi service got activated. This too after tons of phone calls where I was always told it would be taken care of, but never happened. Now the BIG shock....I expected good quality Video, somewhere near DVD quality since this being digital n all....No such luck...this is a majorly compressed MPEG2 video feed !! It is worse than VCD quality. Sound is near MONO unless you use headphones. I thought that signal strength maybe causing this, but I had 75-76% signal, which DISH TV tech said was the max he had seen himself. people usually get 60-65%.Damn !! My cable looked and sounded so much better with full bandwidth, and this DTH looked like small video clip made full screen on my 29 inch TV. I guess it's passable on smaller 21'' screens but looks bad and patchy on a 29''.My advice...don't go for this DTH hype till they improve their service.P.S. another thing...they recently did a software upgrade and dumbed down the set top box. now you cannot make any system changes and can't even see the signal strength. The channel surfing has also become a pain..instead of quickly shifting between screenful of channel menu, now I have to scroll through each and every channel to reach the desired channel. Their telephone support says there is no way to go back to the old firmware. They claim this new one is very user friendly. How is it user friendly when the users don't like it?? their active channels are just marketting hype to attract new customers comparing their service with Tata Sky. No one watches their silly active patchwork.I don;t know about TATA SKY but DISH TV will give you that cheap "quantity and no quality" feeling that reliance CDMA phones gave.

thats It, its final now...waiting for IPTV..enough of dish tv crap

yup dude Dish tv suxx..

Better take Tata Sky...
[/b]

I can't believe TATA SKY would be any better. Do you see squares when the contrast changes rapidly during action scenes? Or do you see colour break up in patches instead of showing gradualness when changing from one colour to another (usually in the background like the sky)? If yes then you're not getting any good quality.

Dude till now there is no such prob as u have listed. Picture quality is very clear and of very high quality.

Same thing happened to me but as they told me that suddenly thr has been a rise in subscriber because now they have STAR channels as well... so i agree with them

My service was activated at the same time when they fixed everything and it was on from the first minute.

The video is kinda STREAMING VIDEO so pixels here and thr are possible but the quality is way BETTER than the local cable and the sound is ROCKS in my Philips SUBWOOFERS.

I think u have messed up the setting. U might have changed ASPECT RATIO setting coz i have 29" and it plays in full screen unless i change the ASPECT RATIO.

My advice...don't go for this DTH hype till they improve their service.[/b]

My advice is first go and see the DISH TV service in one of ur friends house if anyone has it and then go for it.

P.S. another thing...they recently did a software upgrade and dumbed down the set top box. now you cannot make any system changes and can't even see the signal strength. Software upgrade was very helpful. U can see system signal strength BRO... Jus go to LNB setup and there u have to press the RED button to get into the SETUP PAGE and watch the signal strength. Channel scrolling is one the feature which TATA SKY offers and it is supposed to be a GOOD THING. Plzzz jus go through all the MENU buttons and u will come to know alot.

Whats this ASPECT RATIO you are talking about ? I have a 16:9 Aspect Ratio Television so does DishTV OR TATASky support 16:9 Aspect Ratio ?

Tata Sky does support 16:9 ratio in their STB settings (System Settings -> Pictures) but I think the signal is still 4:3.

😀 Guys I know what aspect ratio is and what settings should be used. And yes I have seen DISH and Tata Sky DTH in other setups too. There are other people complaining too. I know what I am talking about when I say the picture quality is bad. Streaming video can have stray pixels going bad here and there but “This” problem is due to the bandwidth. The video is too much compressed. Some of you would love this DTH stuff because your cable was so bad that anything with clearer picture is welcome. You probably won't care about picture dynamics because anything would look DVD quality to you after the bad cable episode. And of course many of you may have smaller 21” which I presume may go perfectly well with this. Some of you may even realize this after using DTH for 6-7 months because the initial euphoria will fizzle out by then.Another thing I discovered, which yes I checked with DISH helpdesk and also my neighbours and friends who have DTH. The DTH signals go down as soon as there is any thunderstorm or rain in Delhi. The signal level just starts dropping and goes down to 0 at times. This is happening every time it rains in Delhi. DISH helpdesk says "yes it is a problem from our side. It will get resolved in 2-3 hours". 2-3 hours??? But the signals resume as soon as the thicker rain clouds have cleared out.Yes I did see the signal strength in the menu section. I don't care about how silly they've made the menu but channel surfing should be simpler like it was earlier. I am learning to remember the channel numbers now, so I can jump to them directly. This is a pain.

I understand your concern, dishtv has about 7Ku band transponders on NSS 6[1] satellite, IIRC.

Each transponder can take upto 10 channels, but with compression they can air upto 12.

So doing basic maths, 7 transponders * 12 channels = 84 channels capacity

But they are offering upto 150 channels, you can imagine the compression which they are doing.

Also, because its a non native Indian satellite, it might not cover entire India properly like Insat-4A which tataSky is on, no wonder you might face signal issues when there is heavy weather conditions.

hmm... thn will dish ever be able to increase their no. of channels ne further witout increasing their compression and reducing quality??and does quality of DTH services get affected by increasing no. of users?

The more the quantity of channels the less the quality.

Amount of customers doesnt affect the quality.

There are some serious issues raised here.
If someone would write up a proper organized note, it could be send to TRAI.
The link: http://www.trai.gov.in/contactus.asp
Their email id: trai@del2.vsnl.net.in

Copies should also be marked to both DishTV and Tata Sky, so that they are aware that the citizens are going to persist in making an issue of bad product and service.

The first issue is the non-interchangability of the STB. This is against the regulations. Also the STB shouild rightly be offered on rent, so one is free to check out the competition when ever.

The signal strength is the next issue. This can be documented in a table of strenght verses date-time for different areas-cities or zones.

The un-neccessary surfing to hunt channels is what even a half-wit would not call user friendly.

The lack of various channels, is very bad. They cannot launch service with this handicap or atleast they should not charge monthly rent till they get their act together.

Citizens have to enforce their needs, this asking for payment up front is the first sign of a scam. No where in india is service paid for before getting it. Do you pay for your food before you eat in in a restuarant, or pay of newspaper before you get it, and so on.

Best wishes.

well said... interoperability is the big issue.if it is made mandatory for operators to provide equipments wich can be used wit all DTH operators, thn the DTH scene in india wuld revolutionise.ppl can hav the option to use different operator services every month and continue with the best one tat too without buying separate STBs.
