Not sure, but they are now claiming STAR MOVIES HD have Dolby Digital Plus (aka 7.1). I recorded whole movie AVATAR in HD with 7.1 on my Tata Sky+ HD and while in the movie they flashed Dolby Digital Plus several times in the bottom left corner of the screen.

Yes, All Star HD Channels are now Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound.

Normally(99%) a 5.1 speaker system (with or without AVR) will have SPDIF support.
