I have a pretty old Dolphin prepaid connection lying around from 2007 which came with lifetime validity.

My question is I can't seem to be able to activate 3G on the connection.

I have 2 questions:

1) Do I need to activate 3G by sending some SMS to a particular number? For example in Vodafone you have to send 'ACT 3G' to 144 before 3G is activated on your connection.

2) If I have some balance left, will I automatically get a pay-as-you-go 3G plan, or do I have to recharge with some top-up or coupon before I can start using 3G?

This is a connection from Delhi, just in case anyone is wondering. Here are the settings that I am using:

MTNL 3G APN Settings For Delhi
APN ppshsdpa
PROXY 172.16.31.10
PORT 9201 (for delhi )
USERNAME mtnl
PASSWORD mtnl123

Umm.. not sure abt Delhi but in Mumbai they have converted all the numbers to 3G for free. That too on HSDPA mode.Probably same is the case for Delhi. Why not call 1503 and ask?

1503 aunties have no idea. Also, my case is a little different because I wish to use the sim on an iPad, from which any SMS/Call/USSD is not possible. I keep switching the sim to a phone to do the network related stuff.

3G Settings

This is official setting for iPad for MTNL mumbai. I guess something similar shud be for Delhi as well.

I think u dont have to give proxy at all

apn - gprsppsdel Leave everything else blank, works on my iPhone. Regarding 3g activation , I have a friend who has an old MTNL mobile connection, he too had issues with 3g, the cc guys kept telling him, that3g was already activated on all dolphin numbers. Try with this apn and see .

@x720 - Thanks, that works. But the signal at my place is horrible. Speedtest shows speed around 220 Kbps (Kilo bits per second). That is horrible, compared to 2 Mbps + that I was getting on Vodafone sitting in the same spot.

You can't do much about signal strength. Do all parts of your house recieve low signal? -79dbm gives me around 2.5 mbps. At the same spot, Vodafone/idea has signal strength of -51 dbm, and speeds of 4mbps+ . Something around -80dbm, should give you decent speeds on mtnl.As far as your second question goes , you will be charged at the rate of1p/10kb (re. 1/mb), pay as you go essentially. You can subscribe to a data pack, if you like.
