hi i am a new member at this forum. i really need some help!!!! i have BSNL broadband connection 625 unlimited plan at 256 kbps speed. when the net is connected to my laptop, the speed is good and you tube videos stream within a few minutes. but as soon as i disconnect the net from laptop to desktop, the speed immediately decreases and i am not able to stream even a 1 min video. the desktop is a new one, just a few months old, and does not have too much data.i reformatted the system as well by a technician in vain.OS on laptop -- Win 7OS on Desktop --Win XPSNR downstream --5.70 db on PC *** 18.60 db on laptopSNR upstream --- 32.5 db on PC *** 32.5 on laptopis there any settings that i have missed on the PC? Please help !!

how are you connecting the laptop and desktop to the internet?

I use the desktop via LAN (network cable) and the laptop via wireless. at any point in time i dont use both (pc and laptop) together. i have a Teracom type 2 modem. T2-B-Gawv1.4U10Y-BI.

so you are getting good speeds on the wireless network but bad speeds on ethernet based connection? this does not make much sense. wired connectivity should provide a better experience no matter how slow the overall speed is. what dns servers are you using on both the machines? (this should not be a problem though)how are the pings to google.com from both the machines?

SNR downstream --5.70 db on PC *** 18.60 db on laptopSNR upstream --- 32.5 db on PC *** 32.5 on laptop 😵That doesn't make any sense as, whether you are using WiFi or non-Wifi SNR won't vary, as it depends on the phone line. Check your Lan cable.

Sorry operamaniac i was not able to post your request as my PC went down suddenly. colorful vertical lines on the monitor, i do no kno if this is a issue with monitor or CPU. however got the system started again.

Primary DNS 218.248.245.1
Secondary DNS 218.248.255.141

DNS are the same on PC and Laptop.

hi nikunj...i tried with a new LAN cable as well, but in vain. no changes. any setting i need to change to ensure the SNR goes up like on my laptop/

Give details of the LAN ethernet card. try to update drivers. In Network settings page againts the lan etherne card box click configure and check all options. Advanced (speed duplex etc )drivers update ..

SNR downstream --5.70 db on PC *** 18.60 db on laptop
SNR upstream --- 32.5 db on PC *** 32.5 on laptop

Mind sharing from where you got this value ?

Ok, streaming is poor in desktop. Are you able to browse ? What about downloads and torrents ? Was that like this from the beginning ? Where you ever able to browse properly on desktop after getting this modem ? If yes, any particular incident after which this started ?

1. Try another LAN port in modem and check.

2. Changing the ethernet cable is an option. Hope you already tried that (confirm you used a new cable and not an already used spare cable).

3. Ping LAN card and see if you can get any response. Try updating the driver or borrow LAN card from a friend (compatible to your motherboard) and check.

4. Hardware reset the modem and check.

More on feedback.

@OPas you said its a new PC so is it custom build or is it a branded desktop?also try starting in safe mode check the speed.
