Hi,

I am planning to get Broadband connection from BSNL - start up plan 250 for my parents who stay at Vizag. If broadband works fine, I will get a Vonage connection in USA and send the phone adaptor to them. So

Is there any particular modem that I need to ask the BSNL, so that I can get vonage working fine in future?

And also I have a doubt regarding the downloading/uploading limit...

For plan 250 the downloading and uploading limit is .4 GB. What does it mean? Even if they check there mails or use yahoo mesenger that will come under downloading? If they use Yahoo messenger for 3hrs/day how much it download's [size] ?

Please help me out by clarifying my doubts.

Thanks
Swetha

Thanks for your reply....

I am planning to send Vonage phone adaptor to them, to get unlimited calls to usa.
Is there any particular modem that I need to ask the BSNL before itself?

So...if they use vonage phone to make calls abroad, will it come under downloading/uploading?

Waiting for reply..

@Swetha , vonage calls thru internet are added to the data usage . your parents need to take home 500 planand opt for type4 modem . better if they purchase themodem from BSNL / market (instead of paying monthlyrental for modem) .

I will definitely suggest them. Thank you Seshu for your information

Swetha, .4gb(that's 400 MB of traffic...includes receiving mail, sending mail, receiving voice, sending voice thro the net)If I guess right, Your Parents will not have much idea about downloading, setting up messengers, inbox for mail check, and typing. IF SO, The best would be to go for ul900 plus(here the phone rental gets removed from bill, and phone charges are Re. 1 per pulse, and no limit on traffic), help them set up something like yahoo messenger with voice/ google talk, and let them keep it online, and accept the call and speak over mic to u, without worrying about there consumption, and how to go about checking the same.

i had that 250 plan before months but i was usually paying 900+ to those money rippers. Then i took 500 plan which i was able to use unlimited transfer only between 2AM to 8AM.And now im on 900 plan in which there is no need to worry about the data usage.you never have to check usage in this plan i.e 24hrs unlimited and pay Rs.900 monthly.

You may think that u can check usage for ur parents (if they dont have any idea how to check usage) in ur own connection in USA by logging into www.dataone.in with the provided username/password but that is IMPOSSIBLE.BSNL allows usage checking only from thier own connections.

Regarding the modem you can buy a D-Link DSL-504-T ADSL modem and a router so there would be no problem for vonage and other stuff. This modem and router are not supplied by BSNL,they only provide some other modems so think some time before doing anything.

hi swetha,I m sedhupathi from Tamilnadu. For plan 250 the downloading and uploading limit is 1GB. Checking there mails or use yahoo mesenger that will surely come under downloading.. and it takes nearly 900 KB for checking mail once.... If they use Yahoo messenger for 3hrs/day download is surely below 2 MB/day (max 100MB/month) excluding video and voice chat.... According to me Its the right plan for them....... even you have a video chat with them once a week for an hour....

Just about.
An hour of video chat on Skype consumes 200 MB approx and in case one needs/feels like a chat sometime mid-week the limit may be stretched.
It's good to start with though, but if subsequent changing plans is a problem it would be a good idea to go in for Home 500/500C.

This post dug up from the archives would however be of little help to the OP who in all probability has already chosen a plan.

i dont think even home 500 would do if you use skype regularly.. unlimited is a good option.. skype audio+video chat works awesome with 256kbps

500 doesn't, as I seem to consume 200MB in an hour.Restricting a session to about 15/20 mins for parents with a recently migrated daughter to the US can be pretty tough! Please do post your experiences with 256kbps, as I'm a bit worried as the Skype forums do suggest a minimum of 384kbps (apart from optimum Processor and webcam specifications) for high quality video(HQV).I wouldn't mind a FQV/TQV (Fair/Tolerable) .TIA

well.. i've tried skype a lot of times .. on a 256kbps connection.. i think you would be very satisfied with the clarity and stuff.. i mean , i dont think i faced any problem at all. i mean as long as both of you have good quality webcams.. it should work well..

Thanks a lot. From my end ,am using a web-cam 1.3Mp ,professing to transmit at 30 frames/sec ,on a core 2-duo processor 2GBram and running Vista Home Premium. The camera at the other end is also good quality and is supposedly capable of more than 24 f/sec at resolutions more than the skype specified 640 x 480.The only stumbling block happens to be bandwidth from this end ,and am wondering whether to step down the resolution of the wbcam at this end to 640 x 480 to compensate for 256kbps if and when I do change to the unlimited 500 plan (discounted price in Kolkata)🙂
