that was perhaps the biggest failing of the movie - releasing in a dubbed voice. Amitabh was too big a star to be dubbed, least of all when his baritone was considered a strength. The film was re-released soon with his voice, but thatdidnt help matters

It was not dubbed, in fact voice of Amitabh was tweaked that way to make it more heavy voice.

An interesting trivia since I brought up Mera Naam Joker. Everyone knows that the film bombed when released. Nothing new there. How many know that the film was re-released by Raj Kapoor's friend Mukesh (the singer), after I think 1 or 2 years, and it bombed AGAIN? What is more interesting is that the film was then re-released by another distributor, who went to make profits on the same 🙂

Re-releasing wasn't an uncommon thing in those days as unlike today, piracy wasn't rampant, so the films would usually release with a handful of prints in Bombay, and then based on response, the prints would be increased in subsequent weeks and they would very slowly go national.

I am pretty sure it was dubbed, though I would be surprised if it is what you say. Do you have some interview or something which states this? Amitabh himself had mentioned about it being a dubbed voice in one of his interviews in the 90s.

This article put some light but its not my original source of saying.

Dialogues are very hard-hitting at places. But the biggest undoing of the film is Amitabh Bachchan’s voice. He has spoken the dialogue in a different voice (inspired by Marlon Brando in Godfather) which will not be accepted by the audience. Further the mixing not being clear, his dialogues are incomprehensible at places.

Review

Agneepath is easily one of Amitabh's best films ever. This film draws heavily from Scarface (starring Al Pacino). I watched Scarface after Agneepath and was quite shocked to see that they were very similar. Afterall, when I watched Agneepath, I thought it was one of the those unique films which had not been inspired by a Hollywood flick! Even the music themes were similar! Amitabh gives a memorable performance as Vijay Chauhan, who is an arrogant, stubborn, rude gangster with a good heart. What makes this film different from other Amitabh films, or even other Hindi films is the excellent potrayal of its main characters - Amitabh, Danny and Rohini Hattangadi. These characters are believable, unlike in most Hindi films and they bring out the reality of the situation. The film is violent at times, the screenplay is sloppy and the direction could have been better! I thought that the original version of the film with Amitabh's modified voice was much better than the one with his own voice. The original version made his character more authentic.

Err, I don't think people were so savvy in 1990 to judge Amitabh Voice and compare its accent with some Hollywood Actor. Its failure at Box office is still mysterious similar to " Lamhe " . Other wise Agneepath had done a nice business in CD/DVD at that time too.

rather strange you guys bring up 'mera naam joker' it is one of the most deep, profound movies made , be it east or west , some movies are not generally made for the normal public or masses they are bound to fail , same with Lamhe , it was again not a move for masses but it was a bloody good movie , i hardly watch Hindi movies over the last 4 or 5 years i would have watched 5 or 6 movies from bollywood mostly cause they are mostly crap , regarding Big B's agnnepath i think it is is one of his best movies right there with Sholay [ which btw is a cult movie ] and one 1 rule of industry don't ever mess with Bachan boss no matter what you do you cannot just fill his boots !! look at Don SRK was looking like a frigging pansy in it , the girl who was the lead nearly handed him his ass in their one fight sequence !! there some things you should not touch and big B is one of them 😛 i shudder to think if some one goes on to remake guru dutt's Pyaasa or Kaagaz Ke Phool 😕

Watched the movie today. I got to say that I didn't just like it, but loved it. Hrithik has done a fabulous job, and so has Rishi Kapoor. Disappointed a bit from Sanjay Dutt but I guess the high expectations from him are the main reason for the disappointment. Priyanka did justice to the relatively small role she had.

Overall an awesome movie. First time ever I got emotional watching a movie. The scene in which Vijay's father is hanged, and another one later when Vijay visits his mother's place for dinner and sits outside the house, eating dal-rice saying that this is his mother's love were two scenes which I found very touchy. I didn't even feel so emotional in any scene of TZP, no idea what happened to me in this movie.
