What features you need in a backup software ?

Hello everyone, I have to submit my final year project this year. I don't want to make some dummy project. So, I thought of writing a image(photos) backup software in Java. I would like to know which features are useful and most needed. Guys, any other ideas instead of this backup software idea are also welcome.
 
find something that has real world uses. like a software that can backup photos from flickr. 😀
 
Another good idea is making a Restore software for Linux. It is one of the most wanted software missing in Linux.

System Restore - Utilizes the Volume Shadow Copy service to restore the computer to a previous state or restore point. It uses the System Restore feature that was first introduced in Windows Me.
 
Now I understand how system restore works. But I don't know what are the critical files and folders which must be monitored and backed up. I am a Linux newbie.
