mega huge 😀

Google becomes a handset maker! Acquires Motorola Mobility.

they are now going to compete against not only Apple, HP and RIM but also their current partners like HTC, Samsung, LG and Sony Ericsson!

----------

Official blog post:

Official Google Blog: Supercharging Android: Google to Acquire Motorola Mobility

----------

This acquisition will not change our commitment to run Android as an open platform. Motorola will remain a licensee of Android and Android will remain open. We will run Motorola as a separate business. Many hardware partners have contributed to Android’s success and we look forward to continuing to work with all of them to deliver outstanding user experiences.

they gain tons of mobile related patents through this... i now understand why motorola had recently said that they might use their own patents to target android handset makers! 😀

----------

Hilarious. TOI reporter states that this is about patents and not hardware.

Twitter / Javed Anwer: Google buying Motorola has ...

So, if I believe him... Motorola patents are worth USD 12.5 billion dollars. heh.

----------

So, Google owners Motorola.
Microsoft practically owns Nokia.
Apple is well Apple.

It is now Google vs. Apple vs. Microsoft in the smartphone (hardware) market!

How the mobile market has changed in the last year or so!

----------

Twitter / Eldar Murtazin: Finally. Nokia could be so ...

What people are saying ? Facts about Google?s acquisition of Motorola

samsung is missing right now. 😀

the big question in my mind is... what would samsung do... increase focus on bada over android? switch loyalties to WP? microsoft would love to expand partnership with samsung. they are biggest loser in this deal.

----------

this is also very good deal wrt google tv.

motorola i believe is pretty deeply involved in the set top box market. with google owning them, they now have the hardware expertise to manufacture great google tv boxes.

It may indeed be about the patents. Only time will tell.

patents is of course one of the biggest reasons for the high price tag. motorola is not worth this much money of course. they are one of the dying mobile players. android is a big reason why they are still relevant.

but the fact remains... motorola patents are definitely not worth this price tag. google sees the need to have hardware capabilities. for developer platforms and to boost their other services.

google would use motorola to push android partners to launch more exciting devices in the future.

i mean few companies are interested in a product like google tv. owning motorola enables them to launch products that showcases the technology to potential partners.

look at chrome. google had no need to launch chrome. but they are pushing their partner mozilla to do much more with firefox. i see this move in a similar direction.

Samsung has commented!

hummm ... hope this partnership will improve the avaliblity of the Motorola ph in india .. they largely targeted to us market ..so what new company will be called ...goo-rola ..awaiting for such announcement from Microsoft regarding Nokia

availability is no longer an issue with online stores offering CoD... i am more concerned about the support aspect. motorola service centers at least here in gurgaon are messed up shit.

they launch there product very late in indian market ... thats the biggest worry ... they were really bounce back with dorid series in us .. they can replicate the same in other countries .. but they didn't ..motorola milestone .. one of my fav handset .. but the same launched very late and the same is still priced at around 19-20 .. where as other handset with better hardware spaces are available at this range ...

motorola has been struggling for the last couple of years. google deal should give them the financial backing to launch their products internationally faster. i am just worried about the service support aspect. motorola and google both are not known for their support.

samsung has nothing to worry about. they are probably the largest android maker in the world. the second largest mobile phone company in the world. and they have bada in case they get annoyed with any major policy change in android in the future. and of course they also make WP devices.

----------

also... the entire android ecosystem wins if google gains from the motorola patents. google is not going to sue samsung/htc/LG/Sony for android related patents. motorola had almost indicated that they might sue android makers if they are found to infringe on their patents.

android is biggest reason for samsung gains .. and same for android so i don't think they will do anything to hurt other partner ... but good thing with samsung that they keep all option open .. they are in BADA .. Android and WP7 ... so who ever gains they also gain .. and they know how to make product affordable with good hardware specs ...
