"It's Asia's fastest growing city and India's IT capital and very soon Bangalore... will have wireless access to the Internet almost anywhere in the city.

[...]

The state government, which had announced this initiative months ago, expects it to happen in the next one year.

[...]

The project will require an investment of upto Rs 30 crore and the consumers may have to dish out between Rs 250 to Rs 900 per month for a wireless broadband connection."

so the city would have bad roads but a working wi-fi connectivity? excellent.

"What is unique about unwired Bangalore is that Taipei was built completely by the government but we want to build it completely through the private sector. The Government will not spend a penny on it though it can play an enabling role," says Professor Sadagopan.

However, that should not be a deterrent since the technology involved is the latest. [/b]

Looks more like a paper tiger then a concrete plan. Since when latest tech become a viable business? And who will pay for spectrum if govt is not involved?

i would be happy if bangalore goes wi-max, BUT in this country the ideas are right, but when it comes to implementation we suck big time, look at broadband -- mind blowing speeds of 64/128/256 kbps and not to mention the ridiculously low download caps. look how much time it took dishtv to get all channels on air..so 1 year ? i have my doubts..

hmm.. speeds not mentioned,, but since trai says 256 is BB , thn it must be 256+ kbps.. gotta watch out for dwnld limits though,, since it has been announced recently,, wuld take more thn a yr to implement 😛

Guess what?Govt been saying from 1992 that all our roads will be made motorable. Hasnt yet happened. I see little hope in this new proposal............ unless its going to make kickback money for a politician, of course.

what a joke - wimax in bangalore. the puny little flyover near my house took 5 years to complete and is still not completely finished. we have been hearing about a metro for the past decade now and a express way linking mysore-bangalore for the past 14 yrs, the roads are pathetic........one can go on and on. i agree with prathapml, unless heavy kickbacks are involved for the ministers and beaurocrats it will never take off. Trust me Bangalore will be the last place to have wimax!

😱 looks like my locality, where do you live gabruputt?

broadband with wires is defined @256kbps in India(by TRAI) , so my guess is that wireless broadband will be defined @64kbps 😀

I just hope it's not varun sharma's whiskey that is doing the talking here ( the article i meant) ! and how exactly are they planning to provide the modems? ....wimax requires special modems. From what i had last read, they are frightfully expensive as of now. but seriously, as i have been saying all along the only way broadband can improve in our country is through wireless technology.
