If I have 44k to blow on a TV, I would pick up:

http://www.sonyindia.co.in/sonyindia/produ...KV-DB29M80%2F50

Its got 100 Hz refresh rate and HD inputs. Useful if you are into action movies or sports.

But it costs twice as much...

I would suggest, go have a look at both Philips and Sony. But make sure:

1. You test the TV with your OWN DVD. And test them with same scenes.
2. You test all the TV at similar brightness/contrast settings.

And pick up any of Philips/Sony.

Both are good, pick up he one that feels good to you and is in your budget.

If you mainly use your TV for good quality content (DVDs, ps2, DTH) then Sony would have the edge in terms of picture quality, but not by much, and IMHO not worth the extra cost you have to pay just for the Sony brand.

My vote goes to Panasonic - awesome picture, component input (which really makes a difference in picture quality), and great value for money... picked up a 29" and a 21" TV last Diwali, and no regrets. (They had a special offer and I even got a 3 year warranty!!!)

I did a lot of research before going the Panasonic way... LG was a close second.

But if you just want it for basic cable, and don't watch DVDs or any such thing, then a brand like Sansui would be much better.

Oh, and don't go for one of these 'woofer' TVs.. they sound crap... you would be much better off saving your money and buying a cheap Creative, Logitech or Altec Lansing 2.1 computer speaker system, and connecting it to your TV.

Well I don't think any cable provider provides Hi-Def (HD) content in India yet. So HDTV would only be good for DVDs and game consoles. On the other hand, the premium you pay for getting a HDTV is very very high compared to countries like the States. Also, the States has passed legislation mandating that all cable providers go digital in a few years (I think 2009 is the deadline). We are nowhere even close to something like that. Hell, we don't even have Tivo (DVRs) here yet in any mainstream semblance.

So ask yourself this first - do you need a HDTV?

While I agree with you 100%. My basic query still remains unanswered from your end. I am looking for advice from an expert like you. LG or Samsung?.

heh, thanks for the compliment, but I wouldn't consider myself an expert... experienced maybe. But, sorry, because of the aforementioned reasons I never have looked for a HDTV, so can't quite advise you. All I know is that Samsung seems to be more popular in the LCD class.Basically, go to a shop that best replicates your requirements - in the sense that if you get cable from a local cablewallah, then go to a store that has a local feed, else go to someone who has DishTV or Tata Sky... take along a few DVDs, and compare these side by side.Other than that have you looked online for reviews?

Bobjosh, brave move on your part to get a HDTV !Do you plan to get a Blu-ray/HD DVD player as well ? 🙄

Thanks vebmetal. Initially I wanted to go for either LG SlimMagic 29FS2RMB or Samsung SlimFit CS-29Z30BP both HDTV but, I went ahead and booked Samsung Bordeaux LA32R71B expected date is on 6th. I got a very good deal sans all goodies. I already have a Sony DVPNS55P/B DVD Player

Guys, I missed to mention the landing cost for Samsung Bordeaux LA32R71B was Rs. 64008/- which I feel is a decent price for a 32’ LCD. I am quite happy with the performance as of now.

Weakest link in picture quality is going to be Cable/DTH. Both Sony and Philips are good and decent.

Sony has broader support in terms of service centers etc, but costs more $$$. Sony also has better DSP chips.

As far as sound is concerned, instead of spending money of a better sounding TV, connect your sound system to TV, you will get better results.

nothing as good as onida

Sony TVs in my experience are not the sturdiest around. The picture quality is decent (I honestly cannot distinguish between most good brands) - the audio is probably the best so if you're not going to hook it up to a home theatre or stereo system and you listen to a lot of music channels Sony would be a justifiable choice. Other than that the sheer premium you pay makes it a poor choice when there are solid, reasonably priced alternatives like LG available.

Well I vote for Samsung LCD its the best man... My uncle got one for 1.25 lacs jus a few weeks b4... Heez got CAS and DTH man I wonder how the TV looks.. Sony is a runner up... Panasonic shares with Sony and then LG is not tht gud AFA I think...Philips is again ahead of LG but behind Panasonic... Well I guess forgot abt Hyundai Electronics.. I dunno how their LCD's look..
