I connected Tata Sky HD + Set top box to My Onkyo HT R-380 Receiver by HDMI. Unfortunately, since Tata Sky stopped sending 5.1 Dolby audio over HDMI cable, I only got 2.1 sound. Hence by some recommendation of forum members, I got an optical audio cable from Belkin and connected it properly. But now in my receiver settings, I cannot give priority to optical audio. If HDMI is selected, it will give out Video and audio from HDMI only. If I select optical output, then screen goes blank but Dolby Digital symbol comes up on my receiver and I get 5.1 audio only (No picture).I need to choose video stream from HDMI and audio stream from Optical cable. Somehow it does not seem possible.Any settings i missed?

How have you connected Onkyon to your TV - HDMI ??

If yes ..then in TV you have to choose Input as HDMI 1 or 2 (whichever is applicable)

In Onkyo you have to select the optical out for Dolby 5.1 output

Should work. Hope this helps.

Yes I had already done what you said. But Onkyo does not let me select optical out when HDMI is displaying both audio and video.

Did not get you ....if you can explain in more detail ...maybe i will be able to help.

1. Connect the STB to the TV via HDMI ( AV goes to the TV ) 2. Connect the STB to the receiver via optical . (Audio only goes to the receiver )

OK.

HDMI carries 2.1 audio and 1080i video to the onkyo receiver. I have connected both HDMI and optical cables from HD box to receiver. So in theory, by using my onkyo remote, I should be able to select HDMI out for video and for audio, I should be able to select optical out for 5.1 sound. But, when HDMI is selected for video out, it overrides optical out settings and plays audio from HDMI only. Optical out settings are ignored.

But then I do not get onkyo settings on TV which are equally important. They are displayed on TV only if we connect HDMI cable

1) Why are you selecting HDMI out from onkyo ...try TV input options and take HDMI1 as input2) From onkyo just select optical outi do the same - select audio out option from my home theater (Philips) and video in option from my TV (Samsung)

According to the manual : http://63.148.251.135/redirect_service.cfm?type=own_manuals&file=SN29400204_HT-S3300_En_web.pdf --- Page 39 --- "AudioSel" 1. HDMI audio is selected as default, when the Video source is HDMI . 2. If HDMI audio and Optical/Coaxial audio are available, HDMI is selected as default. 3. According to the manual ,you can assign Optical 1 to TV/CD, and choose it as an audio source .. ( i think ) This setting can be made only for the input source that is assigned as HDMI IN, COAXIAL IN, or OPTICAL IN. If both HDMI (HDMI IN) and digital audio inputs (COAXIAL IN or OPTICAL IN) are assigned, HDMI input will be selected as a priority by setting to “ARC” (➔ 36). To select the digital audio input, see “Digital Audio (Digital Audio Input)” (➔ 31). Page 31 --> BD/DVD, VCR/DVR, CBL/SAT, GAME, AUX, TV/ CD, PORT COAX, OPT1, OPT2: Select a corresponding digital audio input that the component has been connected.

Great help mate. It worked. Now I can switch audio source with a press of a button. Wished it was little more straight forward 🙂

Thanks again
