Airtel Broadband - Public Or Private Ip's?

Details of ipconfig are useless to you since they will most likely only display a private IP unless you setup the router in bridging mode. An /all would include the DNS servers. The default installation is router setup as NAT.So to get the real IP addr, you would need to look at the routers WAN IP which you get from acessing the mini-web server thats in the router given by Airtel. The IP addresses allocated will be in the ranges 125.x.x.x or 59.x.x.x or 61.x.x.x as explained earlier. Airtel prolly has leased a few subnets in these ranges. What you have not explained yet is *WHY* you care so much about this, what is your intended usage for this internet connection ?

Posts #13 explains this very clearly..Airtel gives you public IP Addresses. The fact that you can host a website on the ip address is prove enough that the ip is public..how would it be possible to host a website if all of us shared the same IP
[/b]

Hosting websites is only possible after port forwarding. The issue about what kind of NATting Airtel uses will become crystal clear if someone posts a screenshot of an ipconfig /all command!!! Cmon guys...hide the last 2 octets of your IP and post the screenshots!

@zewarrior now you have completly lost it  As @blr_p has said IPCONFIG /all will not show you the WAN/public IP (if thats what you want to see). Its now getting ridiculous. Please be more clear with your query or STOP posting same question again & again  I am sorry to say this but it seems to me that you are totally confused in Public/Private/Static/Dynamic/NAT jargon. It is righly said that "A Little knowledge is always dangerours" 🙄

Sorry abt not explaining my needs more clearly earlier. The prime concern is the ability to use my PC as a FTP server. Second issue is to get High ID's in emule and green torrent states in Azureus/utorrent etc. So basically according to the info provided by you guys here I am guessing that its a Dynamic NAT implementation with a pool of PUBLIC IPs. Now the only part left for me to ask you guys is how to accomplish port-forwarding on both the Beetel 100CX and the Beetel 220. Also what are the positives and drawbacks of both these modems? As I am on a public IP with my current ISP I'm a bit worried to shift to Airtel, hence the queries. Thanks for your quick and informative responses people.

You need to understand the NAT only exists after the router. So to get around this there are posts on port forwarding or even how to setup the router in bridging mode. Do a search in the forum. There is no ports blocking by Airtel (with some exceptions, details of which escape me atm), so setting up services to be acessible from the outside is possible. Thing is i'm not sure how well port forwarding would work with a difficult protocol like FTP and Airtel's basic router. Maybe some one more knowledgeable might post. I don't use the other programs you mentioned so can't comment specifically on them.

If you have configured your conn in bridged mode an ipconfig /all will show you relevant details. As for me having lost it, I am making sure what kind of connection I would be purchasing...nothing wrong with that is there? As for the jargon...i have been pretty clear in all my questions. Which part is confusing you dude? And yes you are right about one thing "A Little knowledge is always dangerours". Stop posting your silly sarcastic jibes if you cannot help.

Here's my ipconfig (pls tell me if any personal info is showing). Where do you go from here? 😉

Chill dude i was just joking 😉. Yes you are correct it is a Dynamic NAT implementation with a pool of PUBLIC IPs. I am using router mode so i can't give you screenshots. Now that you have posted more specific query we can help you out. For torrents there is no problem with port forwarding with Airtel's router beetel 22Bx. Its quite easy and it works. Just check my post(post no #3) reagrding the same for post forwarding -->Help on Broadband / 220BX and Utorrent, How to configure the whole thing

Secondly there is absolutely no problem with this modem/router. Its very easy to confiure and it has all the features that you would ever need. As it is taken on rent if god forbid something happens to it, you can get it replaced without any fuss/questions from Airtel's side.

As far as emule is concerned you can easily forward the required ports( TCP and UDP) so there will be no problem with that also.

Now about FTP server I think it is technically possible to host a n FTP sever from Dynamic Ip but i thing you must keep in mind is not to Use default port 21. I assume that Airtel doesn't want users to run FTP servers on home plans. I may be wrong on this and somebody else who is running a ftp server can clarify.

Don't think there would be a prob running FTP, in fact given the quality of the beetel router, it would prolly be best to run at port 21. Of course this assumes you are on an unlimited plan, but the orig poster is aware of that.

I never had to deal with the FTP thing as i get others with faster lines abroad, to do it for me 😉

Thanks for your help people and especially SiriusB for posting that screenie which clears up everything for me. blr_p got me on the right track...thx. Thx real_india for the port forwarding guide. Mods shld make the guides into stickies. And will get the 999 plan by the month end. Cheers!

Dear Sirsi work for airtel dsl in chd.. i can assure u that airtel BB provides public IP to all its customers... In some business plan, you can have static IP's by paying Rs. 2500/- extra per year / per Static IP.. and in business plans above Rs. 11,000/- you get upto 2 Static IP's.. Now Airtel wont provide any static IP in home plan, even if you are ready to pay extra money....regds raj
