Using the connection is quite easy in Linux. But before attempting to help with that, you must tell us:
1. Is your modem in bridge mode? If you are not sure what a bridge mode is, then: do you connect and disconnect the internet connection using an icon on your desktop in Windows?
2. You are using the ethernet cable or the USB cable to connect your modem to your computer?

yes, they have created a dialup with user name & password to connect.
ethernet cable is used not a usb cable.
another thing-i made a configuration with fc5 like this:-created a new dslconnection(there are ethernet connection, modem connection, isdn connection dsl connection etc.)configured the hard ware for that connection-eth0 and edited the static ip address like in windows.after all the connection was made but with poor speed.the page loads after a very long time and then it loads quickly.the down load speed was about 15-20 kpbs.what went wrong?any security changes to be made?or is it ethernet connection to be made?aso tried with suse 10.1&mandriva 2006 but was not able to connect. i want to configure in suse 10.1.please give a step by step configuration for suse 10.1.thanks.

Fine. That means your modem is configured in bridge mode.

I am not familiar with Suse, but I think you need to use Yast to configure your Network Devices to setup your DSL connection. Configure you network card with a static IP address just as you described above. Then configure your DSL connection. This might be of help to do this:
