duh. you do realize that bulk of electricity produced in our country is thermal based? we need to promote renewable sources of energy. wind farms. solar farms. hydel power and so on.

Its a myth that electric cars consume too much electricity.R&D of electric cars must be promoted.I am sure solar and wind power can be utilized as well for these cars.

argh. electricity is already a precious commodity here in india. even the metro cities do not have 24 hours power supplies. every second house in the country has an inverter or some other form of power backup!

government can start doing some good by removing the duties on imports of hybrid cars and technology. prius is priced at around what? Rs. 20 lakhs?

Ouchie....

The Prius will be available in limited numbers in two variants, priced at 26.55 lakh and 27.86 lakh, ex showroom, New Delhi, and bookings start from today.

I think CNG is a pretty decent environment friendly option too , as long as they can sort out the huge lines at the stations and companies launch factory fitted models .

CNG has turned into another cash cow for the government. they already charge 100% tax on petrol and diesel. and from what i remember they are increasing the taxes and other levy on CNG. when it arrived in the market i believe it was like 16-17 bucks per KG (liter?). now it is around 23-24 i believe? diesel is the only fuel that survives tragic hikes in the name of public transport. this is the reason my last two cars have been diesel engine powered.

But i believe diesel engines in cars are taxed more compared to their petrol counterparts.

What the damn people do not seem to understand is that the government is holding them like small chickens in a meat shop ready to be butchered. Jairam Ramesh says its a crime, someone should ask him "How many people not associated with the government in some way or the other drive such cars?" And then he can get a little busy. The government since the era of Indira Gandhi has done nothing but looted the people of the country. The country is riddled with scams all the way, from the bofors scam, kargil scam, cwg scam,2g scam. I mean these are the really big ones. There are more than 10000 scams commited in the last 50 years. What really is the problem is that the country is run by all rich, wealthy people. No-one seems to care anymore about what happens to the 50% population below poverty line. People are just interested in minting money , buying imported cars , stocking large reserves of black money in swiss accounts and riding the god damn gravy train. The government levies a 100% import duty on fuel . For what? Why should the common man pay 2 times the price per litre of petrol ? If fuel was made cheaper it would lead to a more productive country. Food would cost less, people would pay tax (they were saving because other commodities were expensive) , people would commute to their work more easily (leading to less rush and more productive work). These are only some flaws. Just scrapping out the topsoil as they say. The government cries that it doesnt have enough funds to run the country or make the budget. Why do honest office going people have to pay tax which they know is going eventually in the babus pocket and not in repairing the road in front of their house? Still they pay tax every year. The government is not accountable to the people in any way. Just look at the news everyday and you get a idea of how bad things are, but this is just the begining if someone does not make these people quiet we are going to have to face some really shameful moments and look deep in out hearts and think "Are we really that bad?" . What's wrong its the whole damn system thats screwed up . The common man goes to the MLA, the MLA tells him go to the state MP, the state MP tells him go to the CM, the CM tells him go to the PM, the PM says i can't do anything about it. I guess even putting a rough estimate out of the total budget of india made in every bill 20% of that never gets utilised. Most of it finds its way into the Parties or babus pocket. It's really disgusting to even hear that how people of our own country , loot the people of the country and disrupt the common man's life. We have a population of nearly 1.2billion or so , it has been 65 years since independence and we haven't seen a sincere political party really interested in working in the favour of the people and for the people. All political parties are corrupt as the other. Maybe they have a little bit difference here and there but in essence they are all the same. Why does no one want to make an effort and do some good for the country. I could type on and on but i feel i should leave this here tonight and request your views and replies .

the biggest problem with his comments is this... the auto industry does what the government wants them to. government's responsibility is to set the emission standards. india is on bharat stage 3/4 currently. all the automakers comply with the regulations. it does not matter what fuel tech cars use as long as they meet the emission standards. and... the government also has taxes depending upon the car size... i believe bigger cars are taxed at higher rates. insurance is higher. government probably already makes more money from the diesel cars compared to petrol ones. SUVs are more expensive which means higher taxes for the government once again. industry gets little from the government though... roads? infrastructure? the scene is pretty sad. fuel quality is another issue that is largely related to government owned oil companies. government also charges damn high import duty on imported cars and components. companies comply with everything they are asked to. consumer pays the price they are asked to. so who is he to complain about the whole bloody situation? as for lower price of diesel... from what i see, diesel is not really subsidized. of course government probably is not making as much money on diesel sales as compared to petrol but i doubt they are losing any money on selling diesel at a price lower than that of petrol. the manufacturing cost of petrol and diesel is apparently half the market price. taxes makes up for most of the difference.

I am agree that electricity is a precious commodity. I don't know about metro cities, but in my state (Kerala) do not have power cuts. Even the villages (I am from a village) have 24 hours power supplies.

he is right. india is a poor country even today. infact much poorer than before if you look at debt/gdp ratio. debt is fueling the economy.SUVs are a waste not only for india but for the world with dwindling oil supply.his anti GM crops stance is also commendable yet GM crops are being introduced in the country thanks to fast tracking by obama on behalf of monsanto.

The thing is... You cannot blame people buying SUVs for buying them. They earn the money, pay the tax and pay for the diesel. I would like to point here... If the government provides better roads and improved traffic management. the amount of fuel that is wasted in traffic jams and red lights (at least around here in delhi ncr region)... we have plenty of reason to blame the government too. they cannot just target us and complain we are cheating the government by using the cheaper diesel which is cheap coz it powers the public transport (buses and trucks).
