Hey I was wondering. Would you guys consider switching over to phpBB since I believe it has more functionality. IPB is tight, but once more members start registering, I think maybe phpBB would be better. Again, IPB is cool and all 🙂
IPB is way better than phpbb . Recently 5-6 exploits of phpbb broke up in wild (check seclists on some good site like k-otik) and numerous sites were hacked .And as a default installation phpbb cant compare to IPB for sure .
as i said the problem is that phpBB is the only popular board application free... other applications are punBB. For lightweight boards, BBPress is under development!
 phpBB is better than IPB? That is not true. I don't know about the difference in customisation options in phpBB and IPB but IPB is definitely the better one here because it takes less server resources to execute the same instructions. It has been better designed. That is why they generally charge for it 😉 vBulletin is the best but it not available on a free trial(even IPB is limited now).
If features in phpBB out-of-the-box is what you're looking for, check out this modded version: http://integramod.com
But IPB is anyday better than phpBB - lots of mods exist for it, there's a community supporting it, search is good, adminCP is well made, etc. Consider the interface as well, which is lighter for users and more functional.
Show me a "print thread" feature out-of-the-box on phpBB (this feature is ESSENTIAL for tech boards where you have 800 posts in a thread and all are good - don't tell me you are bill gates and can read it online free! print it to html page and read offline!).
IPB is usable with images turned off, by default. phpBB's normal skin wants tweaking to allow for that. Also, the reply to topic screen in phpBB is not well-organized and is crappy. Invision loads your server less than phpBB would.
I don't know why I feel like vomiting, the moment I come across a phpBB-based board! 😀
