IIT Fee May Be Revised From Rs 90,000 To Rs 3 Lakh Soon

An IIT panel today approved a proposal for a three-fold hike in the annual fees all institutes.

If approved, the annual fee will rise to Rs. 3 lakh in comparison to the present amount of Rs. 90,000.

However, the final decision would require the nod of Education Minister Smriti Irani.

Another key recommendation the Standing Committee of IIT Council (SCIC) made was that the proposed new entrance examination designed to test the aptitude conducted by a National Authority of Test (NAT) would be held from 2017 onwards.

Final decision in this regard too rests with Ms Irani, it is learnt.

Sources told Press Trust of India that the SCIC, a body comprising IIT directors and senior officials, in a meeting adopted the report presented earlier by a sub-committee headed by IIT Bombay Director Devang Khakhar which had suggested hiking fees to Rs. 3 lakh and also recommended multiple sources of financing for the IITs.

"However, the sub-committee has been again asked to consider if this fee hike should also be applied to students studying at Post-Graduate level as they are studying on a fellowship basis," a source said.

If the recommendations of the SCIC are accepted, even the fees of foreign students would be raised from the current annual USD 4000 to USD 10,000, they added.

I guess it's cool. Instead of being cursed for using taxpayer's money they can now get loans and be free to criticize the government.

Complete Fee Waiver For SC/ST, Dalit Students Of IITs: Smriti Irani

Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani has promised a complete tuition fee waiver for students from backward classes, and those who are physically challenged, at the country's top technology institutes. Besides a complete fee waiver for these students, those with a family income of less than Rs 5 lakh will be given a 66% concession in the fees.

So what is the catch? They cannot criticize the government? They cannot enter politics? They have to start their day with 100 chants of Bharat Mata Ki Jai?

Now, Sanskrit to give ancient technological edge to IIT graduates

Students at the Indian Institutes of Technology may soon be studying ancient engineering techniques — such as the one used by the monkey army to build the Ram Setu bridge to Lanka in the Ramayana — written about in Sanskrit texts.

Several IITs have informed the HRD ministry of plans to introduce the ancient language in curriculum — a ‘request’ earlier made by former education minister Smriti Irani to the schools.

On paper I assume?

IITs to count PhD scholars as faculty to improve student-teacher ratio

Currently, there are 2,600 faculty positions lying vacant across all IITs. The student-teacher ratio stands at 15:1 as against a desirable 10:1. Once the proposal implemented, the 26,000 PhD scholars at IITs will count as an additional 5,000 faculty members. “This will help the IITs achieve the desired faculty student ratio,” the official added.

What exactly does it achieve?

PopThe HRD Ministry hopes that an improved student-teacher ratio this will also help better the performance of IITs in the international rankings. Out of the seven IITs which figured in the top 700 of the QS world rankings this year, six have slipped several places compared to last year. IIT Madras was the only exception which improved its ranking by five places to join the top 250 club.

Thread title mentioned "ration" 😛
Happens with me as well many times. When I have to type "ratio", somehow by mistake I add "n" in end. Don't know why it happen.
