I have got a doubt and I need someone to clear this.I have taken a BB connection from BSNL. I want to know if someone comes to know about my user name and password can he ...Log in and use my internet connection from some other place in the same exchange or from any other place in the BSNL network. My BSNL guy told me user name and password is unique to the telephone number and cannot be accessed from anywhere else just like in a dial up.

Yes the BSNL guy is right .... you connection is secured and can can only be accessed by your TELEPHONE Line only

It is true BSNL connections are port binded in simple terms whenever a new user name is tightly coupled with your phone number. Intially When BSNL started its broadband connection then there is no port binding at all. any one can suck your bandwidth by knowing your username password. Then in 2007 they implemented this new facility called port binding . In this system when you want to establish a connection your phone number is appended to your username. which makes it impossible for any one to connect even if they know your username/password . So you can relax and keep enjoying for what you have paid without worrying about the hacking username password

As far as i know the ip starting from 117.... is bonded to the line or number which is provided BB and can not be hacked and working only in that number😛.but my friend has ip starting from 59 ...he tells me that it can be hacked and doing sometimes .😕please somebody confirm and i may be wrong 🙁

I do not have much to worry as I have an IP starting from 117 as well as my net in unlimited. One worry is if someone uses my account simultaneously (if that is possible) then the speed might go down. Also another worry is if the hacked account is used for illegal purpose, it will reflect my IP and would police come running to me ?!

Your connection is bound to your modem's MAC ID. ie, if someone use your log in credentials, it will show their modem's MAC ID and you can prove it easily.

You are right Mr. Sagar. I had earlier 59..... series ip and the user name was not bond with the telephone number. Now from last more than 1 1/2 yrs. my ip is changed to 117. ..... and the username has telephone no. with it. You can easily guess by looking the username. If it contains city code+phone no. then not to worry. Because the username used to connect with broadband cannot be changed. You can change only the username for logging to check your usage and your emails.

The Working of Port Binding is extremely simple.Suppose your phone no. is 01883283840 and the username assigned to you is . When the Bsnl guys a created a username its is not bound with the phone number. the first time you will use your username passowrd . the username is registered in a server in the Local Exchange prefixed by your phone no. and the username become 1883283840bsnl_port. 🙂ashamed: I am not exactly sure if the post fix or prefix the phoneno. :ashamed🙂 either way the phone no is always added to your username . and that become the new username the process is entirely hidden.Suppose somebody else having phone no, 01883265432 has the username password . then when he tries to connect the username become 1883265432bsnl_port and the server refuses the connection because this username doesnot exists. when i got my broadband connection i installed the modem and my bad luck the phone line is down. I was little curious and i had tested the username password on my friend PC it worked. And when next day my phone is working then i got a error the username is not correct. Luckily the JTO dealing in the exchange was an old friend, then he vanishes the old username and gave me the newone , and also explained me how this whole port binding thing worked.😱 Regardless of which IP address you are using your are always port binded 😱

Well, the username password are binded alright, buts its really easy to know the customer account no., atleast for mtnl. You just take ip address of the user, login into the router using the ip address of the user, see the page with username password and check the html source code and there you have it, the CA no. of the user along with its phone number. You can't use the username password to surf the internet but you can do shenanigans with it, say change tariff plan etc.

BSNL, MTNL, Airtel all have port binding enabled for a majority of of users, but its not Modem MAC-id, if it was then u wouldnt be able to replace ur modem and use a new one if the old one went bad.

If caught, you will have to pay a good amount. May be much more than you have used. If th neighbour complained of huge bills, they will check the MAC ID of the connection and will find that it is from your modem. It will be considered as hacking and you will have to pay dearly. If they forwarded it to police, they may charge your for hacking. From what you posted, you have already given your MAC ID records in concurrence with your connection.

sry if this thread is too old, but i just came here to confirm:THIS PORT BINDING STUFF IS BULLSHIT. Dont believe? I was also told by the exchange operator that i dont really need to change my password, as it is "port binded".Today, i found a new unsecured wifi network in my building, so most probably it is a new installation in some home. Of course i connected to router page with "admin" "admin" login, and the page opened up!! a confirmed NOOB lol. i went to his pppoe setup, clicked edit, and copied his username. most bsnl passwords are "password" (even mine), so i just put those login stuff on my router, and it just CONNECTED FINE. AND im getting 2MBPS speed, instead of the crappy 512kbps limit of my 750 plan. i guess that wifi user has 250 plan? im typing this using his account and planning to download some really big blu ray quality movies at 2mbps 🙂dont u believe what the bsnl ppl say.
