I'm looking to migrate to Airtel from Tata Indicom, after their ridiculus Fair Usage Policy wherein they terminate service if Fair Usage Policy limit is reached.

Anyway, I wanted to shift from my existing 512 kbps plan to a 2 mbps plan. And I found this.

Broadband Plans- Broadband Tariffs- Internet Connection Provider in India:Airtel

The Freedom 2999 plan. And it looks good to me.

What is the Fair Usage Policy limit on 2 mbps connections anyway? 100 GB? So after 100 GB my connection speed reduces to half?

Their notes say this:

*Applicable only for Residential Segment.
*Installation Charges (Non-Refundable) Rs.500
*First Month Usage Benefit(FMUB)-Charges Rs.500
*First Month Usage Benefit(FMUB) Applicable only in first month of activation, Cannot be carried over.
*Addition free calls to Airtel Local FL Rs.400 and Airtel Local Mobiles Rs.100 in first month of activation. Broadband is defined as an always on Internet Connection with a minimum download speed of 256kbps.

FUP Limit 100GB Speed Post FUP 1Mbps

Please help out. Thanks.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm a heavy user so I dont mind paying Rs. 3000 if the service is good. 100 GB is a nice buffer to use 2 mbps at and then move to 1 mbps which is still better than my current plan of 512 kbps for which I'm paying 1799. I found this to be the best plan for 2 mbps Unlimited. Any other that is better or you recommend? Should i go for it?Thanks for the info. 😀

2100 bucks for 1mbps unlimited that would become 2 mbps by june. get that.

even after FUP hits, you would still get 1mbps (after june) and 512k currently. not that bad of an offer.

but not as good as MTNL 1mbps UL.

But we still do not know what FUP limit will be imposed after the speed is doubled. I heard that the limits would be insanely low.

I checked online as well, and my area (lane/road) has airtel coverage. So i think I'll go for this.. hmm...

Freedom 1699? Because its 1 mbps.. and after the FUP limit it would be 512 kbps would it not?

I also read about the new 4 mbps impatience plans. Is it just me or are those bogus? I mean 50 GB on a 4 mbps plan is barely enough. And after the FUP limit it would be 256 kbps(not even). Whats up with that?

4 mbps impatience plans are very cheap. aren't they? they are designed for light users. not us. as for the plan i suggested. i forgot that i pay 2100 for the IPTV plus 1mbps plan. the regular plan is the one priced at 1700+taxes. i pay 1900+taxes.

Light users would be satisfied with 2 mbps dont you think? Heavy users are in the need of 4 mbps.Anyway, shall i go for this? Any catch with this plan or anything?

you are ignoring a simple thing. they get to advertise 4mbps. that is a big catch for regular folks. who are used to seeing 2mbps plans from BSNL/MTNL (with terrible download limits). and 4mbps connections mean that whatever they do on the web is fast and smooth. accessing Gmail is a much better experience on 4mbps compared to 256kbps connection. we are not the customers who are profitable to companies like Airtel. so they do not really care about us. FUP is a direct result of that. bulk of their customers are likely to be folks who do not require too much bandwidth. but it is a good thing that they can get faster speeds for the little browsing they do.

I agree, and thats the reason why I feel the BB situation will never improve in India. Sure the speeds wil rise, but not the Bandwidth.

Anyway, shall i go for this? Any catch with this plan or anything?

?

well mgcarley has given in enough details which explain why broadband is not cheap in india. nixi is one party to blame. the internet gateway owners are another party. TRAI is yet another party. look at 3G. spectrum is too little. companies are spending hundreds and thousands of crores for the spectrum. government is making the moolah. 3G launch would be a sad new development with high rates and crappy data transfer limits. the government is to be blamed as well. the ISPs alone cannot be blamed because they have to run their operations profitably. and providing cheap broadband is not a good way to achieve that.
