Hi FriendsI have the home BSNL broadband plan and as per the rule I should get a dynamic IP address. But when I asked my friend to ping my PC from outside BSNL network, he was not able to ping (Timeout).I think there is a BSNL firewall, which is not allowing the incoming traffic into BSNL network. Is it happening for all ? I wanted to setup a web server on my home PC with a dynamic IP address just to share files with my friends.Thank you.

if you just want to share files with your friends... i had suggest using opera unite feature. it would be simpler to set up. simpler to disable/disconnect. so that you do not end up leaving vulnerabilities open on your machine.

There is an option in XP for enabling Pinging. I don't remember that option right now. And, enabling that option lets you ping your IP from other networks/including BSNL.Its not the fault of the BSNL/or their firewall. And as Admin suggested, you can share your files using Opera Unite 🙂

See, I just gave an example of file sharing. But what I want ultimately is "To setup a web server on my home PC using BSNL broadband."

Though I know with my plan of "Home 500C" I'll get dynamic IP every time I'll connect. But when I'm online I want my friends/relatives to browse my pages through my home web server using the ip address in their browser (as I do not have a domain name).

Infact one of my friend has setup a full fledged web server at his home PC and when he connects to internet using BSNl broadband, there is a script which updates the current dynamic ip to his DNS server, so that anyone can access his pc with a name.

So, for me, how my friends can access my pc who are outside BSNL network ???

thats what i would want to know... what exactly do you plan to do with a web server?

you do know that doing the same is likely to make your system more prone to possible web attacks?

are you capable of ensuring the safety of your machine once you open it to the web as a web server?

opera unite is a safer solution easier to implement. you can share files, run a website hosted on your computer, do a lot more. look into it. it's a safe option and you can turn it off by closing down the browser.

Opera Unite

the thing is. opera unite works nicely and with very little configuration. they have existing solutions for:

running a website
running a photo gallery
streaming music from your machine
let people upload files to your computer
let people download files from your computer
and more...

you can password protect everything. you can turn it off within seconds. you can turn it on within seconds.

your friends can be on any internet connection. using any web browser. it works just fine.

File Sharing by sushubh and Opera Unite here check it out. i would keep it open for 30-40 minutes. you can see how it works for file sharing.

File Sharing - Opera Unite applications
Web Server - Opera Unite applications

First you would need to use some kind of http server software...like apache or if you are want FTP then some some ftp server software. Then you need a software such as no-ip.com which as you said dynamically updates your ip with their site.It will give you a website name such as urpradhan.freesite.com (just an example). So now when anyone types the site name in their browser they will automatically get connected to your home server.

Thank you admin and xmen.I know "opera unite" is the solution what I'm looking for. But I'm not looking only to solve my purpose here, I want to understand it technically, Why my friend in another n/w can not access my PC ? Where as friends in BSNL n/w are able to access it. I think either BSNL blocks certain incoming traffic to its n/w or I have to setup a routing rule in my router/NAT.As far as the software is concern, I'm using my favorite XAMPP (bundled Apache, MySql, Perl, PHP, FileZilla, etc ..) and I have secured all the modules in XAMPP including .htaccess files and restricted access to FileZilla.

I tried online trace route to my IP. and its reaching upto NIB, BSNL, New Delhi, ie, upto 218.248.253.98 from USA servers and after that its getting timedout.
