Checking usage

Hello all.Can some one tell me how to check the usage of 3 G card.Just started to freak out on usage - Want to keep a tab. Also planning to install an Zappix modem. If any one has some info on whether Zappix is best or Edimax is best please do share the same.
 
I was told by technical guy at BSNL office that there is no way of checking monthly 3g usage. He was there was a sms service, but that charges Rs 2 / sms or something so not to go for that.I use phone's log facility, erase log at end of month.Although BSNL should provide some way of checking usage, If someone knows how to do so please do tell us.
