A lot of people on this forum rely on speedtest.net for ascertaining the speed that their ISP gives them. However i have discovered that speedtest is not reliable as it inflates/boosts the speed figures. In fact any body can try out a test by using a bandwidth meter like dumeter and timing their downloads (this is best way of doing a speed test) the result will be less than the figure given by speedtest.
For eg in my case according to speedtest.net my speed is ( iam on Airtel turbo 1299 plan with 512 Kbps in day and 1 mbps in night)
Speed test done in day-time
https://www.speedtest.net
However the maximum speed that i actually manage by downloading a file in multiple segments from various servers is only 545 Kbps whereas speedtest shows it as 660 Kbps
As the above comparison shows speedtest has inflated my speed figures by atleast 115 Kbps. The problem is that it records the burst speed and not the average speed hence its not at all accurate especially incase of ISP's that dont control speed by sync rate viz. BSNL and Airtel, though it does give a general idea of the speed.
