The NSN will cover the eight telecom circles named Mumbai, Maharashtra-Goa, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh-Chattisgarh, Bihar-Jharkhand, Orissa, Kolkata and West Bengal.

HELSINKI: Telecom gear firm Nokia Siemens Networks said on Thursday it had won a $700 million network contract from Bharti Airtel to expand and
upgrade India's top operator's GSM network in eight of its regions.

The contract includes network planning, implementation and project management, handling of local logistics and materials, as well as system integration for the base station sites, Nokia Siemens said in a statement.

Nokia Siemens said it will also ensure that Bharti Airtel's core and transport network is 3G-ready in order to reduce time to market and enable the fast rollout of 3G services at a later date.

NEW DELHI: Swedish telecom equipment maker Ericsson has emerged as the leading contender to win a $2-billion contract to increase the capacity of
Bharti Airtel’s network in 15 circles. India’s largest telco, which awarded a $700-million network outsourcing contract to Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) on Thursday, will announce the deal soon, said people privy to the deal. Ericsson manages and maintains Bharti Airtel’s networks in these 15 circles.

An industry executive familiar with the development said the deal will be signed within the next three months. “This contract is set to go to Ericsson since it is for upgrading the existing 2G networks that are built and maintained by them. Chinese players stand a huge chance in the upcoming 3G network contracts,” he said. A Bharti executive said the contract to upgrade the company’s networks in 15 circles will be awarded soon, but declined to provide details.

they r upgrading ther network gprs edge networks and along with that they r making it 3G ready so that it could launch 3G services easily after getting spectrum

there is no Guarantee that airtel will get spectrum in the auction.then why is it hurrying?

Are you kidding me? The biggest telecom player not getting spectrum! By hook or crook Airtel will get it.

Airtel will get the spectrum.I have been waiting for them to get 3G since BSNL had started their 3G services. I have faith, I have stuck to Airtel. Just wait and watch!

If Airtel doesn't get, no one will. Airtel and Vodafone will be the first ones to get the 3G spectrum, followed by Reliance GSM and Docomo.

Ha ha , it is not possible to provide 3G service on existing infrastructure , i mean if airtel plug on 3G BTS on existing tower , airtel needs to add double the tower it has , because of 3G GSM spectrum (2.1GHz) higher the frequency less the range ,

Airtel and Vodafone will be the first ones to get the 3G spectrum
True these companies have already invested a lot in 3G technology, iPhone 3G being one of the major ones. So these companies should be the first ones of get 3G in India.
