I've been trying for 2 days now, and I can't even seem to get half my speeds to this FTP server. I'm on 2mbs connection and I'm getting around 140kbs max. It isn't an issue with the server, since it's running fast. So, what could be the cause? Bad routing or does Airtel throttle FTP?

I don't think Airtel throttles FTP. Maybe there is some issue with the server or the route.

server might be running fast. but it might have a limited pipe that might be chocked. for example forum is running on a server that i think gets a dedicated 10mbps line... so you cannot really expect to download or upload at speeds faster than that.

Handy to troubleshoot if you provide the following:-
1) Ping response to the FTP server. (Send some 100 packets).
2) Biggest IP packet you can ping to this server without fragmentation (ping -l 1500 -f FTP-Server). If 'framentation required', then keep lowering the size of the IP packet until you get a response).
3) Trace route to this FTP server.

By the way, how do you know the server is running fast?

what i would suggest is check the upload speeds on some other server... for example... try uploading a video file to youtube... youtube should be able to show you the max upload speed you can get on your connection.

Where is the ftp located? Maybe it's capped...Haven't used FTP myself for a while now so can't say for sure if Airtel has started throttling FTP or not.

Yesterday night, i kept a 1.7 gig movie for download from my seedbox server account using ftp. when i checked in morning, transfer was going at 10KBps, only 200mb got download till morning. i m on 512kbps unlimited plan. this is the first time i am seeing that kind of low speeds from my seedbox, i normally get around 55 to 62 KBps . will keep download again this night and see whats the matter with this slow downloadI hope Airtel is not fiddling with ftp connections

if you want me to test... i would test downloads and uploads on my own server through FTP tonight... coz i have never seen ftp speeds to be slower than the regular internet on my own server.

observed for last couple of days, FTP speeds are OK for me, all izz well 🙂
