Imgur confirms email addresses, passwords stolen in 2014 hack | ZDNet

In September 2013, the online image sharing community imgur suffered a data breach. A selection of the data containing 1.7 million email addresses and passwords surfaced more than 4 years later in November 2017. Although imgur stored passwords as SHA-256 hashes, the data in the breach contained plain text passwords suggesting that many of the original hashes had been cracked. imgur advises that they rolled over to bcrypt hashes in 2016.

Have I been pwned? Check if your email has been compromised in a data breach

my id is included.

Dear sushubh,

We are writing to inform you about a data security issue that involves your Imgur account. We have taken steps to secure your account.

What Happened?

On November 23, 2017, we were notified about a data breach that occurred in 2014. Based on our analysis, we believe that an unauthorized third party stole user account data from us. You are receiving this email from us because your information was compromised. While we are still actively investigating the intrusion and no suspicious activity has been detected since the start of the investigation (the breach was in 2014), we wanted to inform you what we know as quickly as possible.

What Information Was Involved?

The stolen account information included your email address and password from 2014. As you know, Imgur has never asked for real names, addresses, phone numbers, or other personally-identifying information (“PII”), so the information that was stolen did NOT include such PII. We have always encrypted your password in our database, but it may have been cracked with brute force due to an older hashing algorithm (SHA-256) that was used at the time. We updated our algorithm to the newer Bcrypt algorithm last year.

What Steps Are We Taking?

We are immediately requiring all potentially affected users to update their password. You will be logged out of your account on Imgur and you will need to reset your password to sign back in.

What Can You Do?

If you used the same password for other sites and apps, we urge you to update them immediately. We recommend that you use a different combination of email and password. Finally, please always use strong passwords.

We take protection of your information very seriously and will be conducting an internal security review of our system and processes. We apologize that this breach occurred and the inconvenience it has caused you. If you have questions, we encourage you to contact us at support@imgur.com.

Sincerely,
Muts Inayama
VP Engineering, Imgur

Starting on March 14th, 2018, email uploading will no longer be supported on Imgur.

I use this feature a lot. I am not happy with this change. But then, they have been doing a lot of things that they got right as an image sharing service. But does not interest them now that they are a image based social platform.

Imgur has a new homepage under development. Right now in Beta. Requires Opt-in.

I am not sure if the services have gone bad or they've limited Indian ISPs, but after reddit ditched Imgur or vice versa, Imgur doesn't seem to be working well. Upload takes time, even the images load very slowly.

That's very likely depend upon your ISP. How well they are connected to the cdn used by imgur. Imgur and Twitter were shit on excitel till a few months ago. Both are fine now. Likely they fixed connectivity issues with fastly.

Now, we’re opening the next page of Imgur’s journey. We’ve been acquired by MediaLab! MediaLab, based in Santa Monica, CA, is a company that owns great internet brands like Whisper, Kik, WorldStarHipHop, Amino, Genius and others.

my concerns are this site lol. self-hosting all imgur hosted images here would require me to go back to using a s3 type service which would add another monthly bill to keep this site running.
