No kiddies , i am not gonna teach you how to walk on a tree with a openDNS server on your head. 🙄

Aah, But i am gonna do better, I am gonna show you how to use Treewalk DNS caching service with openDNS. 😀

Firstly, you must know what treewalk is, TreeWalk DNS is a Domain Name Server program which fetches and converts Web Site human-readable names into the numbered addresses your computer needs so that your browser, email, instant messenger, and FTP programs can surf the Web.

You might ask why you should use treewalk and openDNS together, when your life is fine with openDNS (the classic, don't fix it if it ain't broken example), well there are multiple reasons for that, allow me to arrange them,

1. Because I say so. :cool2:

2. When you type a web address eg. "www.example.com" in your browser it needs to be resolved to a IP address, a DNS basically does that for you, when you use openDNS your browser sends requests to openDNS servers to resolve it to a ip address. now every time your browser requests a resolution, there is a slight pause in which a request is sent to openDNS servers even for same sites.

What a DNS caching service (like BIND in treewalk) does is let your browser make the request for the fist time and then store the result in the cache, then when it asks for the resolution of the same site again it refers to the cache on your disk. This speeds up the resolution drastically and the website loads faster.

3. Because you don't trust or don't want Microsoft's DNS client service and want speedy resolution.

4. You just want to show to your gal or friends how cool you are using a alternate DNS caching service. (In case you are trying to impress your gal, say hello to her from me, she probably knows me even before she met you n00b.) 😛

5. Treewalk without openDNS went AWOL on you, refer to my thread at https://broadband.forum/bsnl-broadband/51455-bsnl-gateway-probs/

6. You want to enjoy uber-fast browsing due to reduced DNS delay's. :dance: :yahoo:

I have no idea why you would go with other reasons, when the first is amply enough.

Now to installing treewalk with openDNS

"Note: Some anti-virus products may incorrectly flag the "instsrv.exe" component used during installation as malware. This is commonly known as a false positive detection. TreeWalk DNS has never and will never be associated with any type of malware but despite this, you should turn your anti-virus or security suite OFF prior to installation. If you're still unsure, check the files with an online virus checker (like VirusTotal) before running them. Do not let your security software delete or quarantine any TreeWalk files." excerpt from their (Treewalk) downloads page.

1. Download it from here "http://ntcanuck.com/downloads.htm" and install it, and restart if you have win xp. skip to the 7th point (only for win xp).

2. If you have vista or win 7 you are gonna have to TURN OFF UAC (google it) if you haven't already and then start the installation as an administrator. When you arrive at the final page with the restart options, select "No, I will restart later", then exit the installer. If you have normal admin usernames and passwords in vista or win7 with no spaces such as "iamnotanoob" (numbers with text are okay too) skip to the 4th point.

3. If you are a n00b and keep spaces in your win vista or win 7 usernames or passwords, example, usernames or passwords such as "I am an idiot" follow the instructions located here "http://confetch.com/history.htm#uac" .

4. Click the start button and type "services.msc" in search bar without quotes.

5. Scroll down to the "twdns" Service and right-click for "Properties" (or double-click "twdns"). Verify that the "startup type" is Automatic, if it's not then set it to that. Then Choose the "Log On" tab and enable the "This account" option. Type ".\Local_Administrator_Account" (without the quotes, where "Local_Administrator_Account" is the Administrator's Account name you're running under, preceded by a dot and a backslash). Enter and confirm the correct password and "Okay"/"apply" your way out.

(note : If you are lazy and haven't set a password for your admin account yet, the service wont start, so i recommend that you do set a password to your admin account (do that through the control panel > user accounts), if after setting that password, you don't want to type a password every time you log into win vista or win 7 you can do that by clicking start button and typing "netplwiz" without quotes in the search bar, and then uncheck "users must enter a ..." type admin user/pass click "Apply"/"OK" and its done. It's certainly NOT the most secure way, but if you are the only one who uses that pc of yours, this might save a few seconds while logging in.)

6. Now click start and type "notepad" in the search bar. (for win vista and win 7)

7. In win xp click start run and type "notepad.exe"

8. Click file > open in notepad select "all files" in file-type option, browse to the x:\windows\system32\dns\etc\ (where x is the drive you installed windows in, it would be x:\windows\system64\... for 64bit OS) find the file named "named.conf" (won't appear if you haven't selected "all files" in file-type) open it.

9. Now scroll down untill you see something like this

// forward first;
// forwarders { 4.x.x.x; 4.x.x.x.; };

10. Replace those 4.x.x.x ip's with openDNS server ip's and delete those "//" in front of "forward first" and "forwarders", it should look like this,

forward first;
forwarders { 208.67.222.222; 208.67.220.220; };

(Note: for those who THINK they are smarter than me, dont use 4.x.x.x and 4.x.x.x as forwarders or as primary or alternate DNS for daily DNS needs, it's considered as bad net-iquette to hog their bandwidth, and should only be used for troubleshooting DNS probs.)

11. Ok, we are done save the changes, close all open windows, restart your system, and take that toilet break you are avoiding since the beginning of this post.

12. Go to your lan properties > tcpip (tcpipv4) properties > set preferred DNS server as 127.0.0.1 and delete/leave blank that alternate DNS server. "apply"/ "ok" your setting.

13. Additionally if you are using a dial up connection (bridged mode) go to it's properties click the networking tab, in the properties for tcp/ip (tcp/ipv4) click "Use the following DNS addresses" radio button and in the primary dns server type. 127.0.0.1, and leave the alternate blank.

14. To check if everything went fine visit "http://www.opendns.com/welcome/" if you are greeted with a big red check-mark, everything went fine and the settings are working. If not you probably messed up somewhere, read carefully again!

15. If you have a firewall, allow total access for "named.exe" (that's the treewalk executable that's gonna do all the work).

16. Do post any problems you face. ( only related to this thread, don't ask me to solve your gastric or "small/thin tool" probs.) :hysterical:

Next Guide (If I ever make one again) :- How to use Firefox To avoid targeted adverts.

The mods and admin/s can stick this thread to the main bsnl sub-forum if they wish/want to.

Legend for n00bs: ( click - left click, right click - obvious!, win 7 - windows 7 beta os "This os has a bright future" , win xp - windows xp, vista - pathetic and sorry excuse for a OS "n00bs love and swear by it, so you'd probably hate me!") 😛

Experienced chaps plz help those who you can, I visit this forum only a few times during the day, and if there are any mistakes, do point them (except for the fact about vista).

Thanks for adding to the knowledge , Evol, :urock:I checked out the acrylic DNS caching software.It's really nice, and has simple options, to increase the time entries stay into cache, update entries, etc.But, Treewalk uses BIND and is much more advanced DNS solution, if one is willing to tinker with it's settings.However, I would actually recommend Acrylic DNS to those who wish to have a simple, light, and fast DNS caching solution and do not fry their "bheja" in the oven trying to learn Treewalk. :inodding:Being, said that if anybody wishes to know how to use Acrylic DNS ( a short tutorial perhaps, with some basic cache handling options) , then feel free to ask. (Do note: that I am not currently using Acrylic DNS, so it would take sometime to know the "tick tocking" of Acrylic.)
