Fox Star Studios, a pan-Asian movie production and distribution joint venture between Twentieth Century Fox and Star Group, has entered into a multi-film co-production deal with South India based producer-director A Murugadoss.

The deal will mean a foray into regional movie space in India for Fox Star Studios. The firm which had earlier distributed the Oscar winning movie Slumdog Millionaire in the country, announced a similar tie-up with Bollywood producer Vipul Shah for Hindi movies in October last year.

Fox Star Studios has now struck an exclusive deal, where Murugadoss will direct all the Tamil films co-produced by the two partners. Fox Star Studios will be the sole distributor of these movies.

A Murgadoss recently produced the Hindi version of Ghajini, which claimed to have the biggest ever opening at Indian theatres with earnings of Rs 64 crore in the first week and went on to gross Rs 200 crore in just 14 days worldwide.

According to the plan, the partners will initially co-produce two Tamil movies with a total budget of around Rs 60 crore. Thereafter the venture will gradually expand this tie-up to other movies.

Vijay Singh, chief executive officer, Fox Star Studio India, says, "Tamil movie industry is one of the largest in the country after Bollywood and growing at 15 per cent per annum. This made us look at the segment. Tamil movies have a significant market in international countries too."

According to the FICCI-KPMG entertainment report, of the estimated 800-1,000 movies released in India every year, Hindi movies account for almost a quarter. This is followed by Telugu movies constituting 21 per cent, while Tamil movies account for 13 per cent of the total.

Many large mainstream production houses in India such as Eros International , UTV Motion Pictures and ADAG-owned Reliance Entertainment have forayed into regional cinema in the country.

Singh said Fox Star Studio plans to release its first co-produced Indian language movie late this year while the first Tamil movie will be released next year. It is targeting to release 4-5 movies per year through the two co-production deals in the country.

Murugadoss said, "The partnership gives me a chance to use my deep association with the Tamil film industry to tell exciting new stories with our established stars."

According to Murugadoss, he will use this partnership to promote new talent in the Tamil film industry, "We will be able to promote new talent and on top of that this partnership will also bring to Tamil cinema learnings from the best technical and creative people and from around the world."
