Annual monsoon rains, vital for India's farm-dependent economy, on Thursday reached the Andaman Sea and adjoining southern Bay of Bengal, two senior officials of the state-run India Meteorological Department told Reuters.
"Monsoon has set in over the Andaman Sea," said one of the officials, who did not want to be identified as he is not authorised to speak to the media.
Another official said this had brightened the prospects of an early arrival of monsoon rains over the Kerala coast.
Last week, the weather office had forecast the June-September monsoon rains would hit the southern Indian coast on May 26, ahead of the normal arrival date of June 1.
