The sad news about test crciket is coming from most traditional cricketing nation - England, where for 2nd test between England & West Indies only 3000 tickets were sold in the stadium of 16000 capacity. Its contrasting to situation of T20 & IPL response. T20 is pulling crowd every where, and even IPL (India's domestic tournament) proving crowd puller in foreign nation (South Africa) after it was shifted there for security reasons. Even ICC getting aware of it by arranging T20 world cup immediately after 2 years where as ODI worldcup which is arranged after 4 years. But nothing is done for Test Cricket's revival.
Testing time at Riverside with tickets hard to sell
The full house is far from assured, especially for the first day’s play, for which only 3,000 tickets have been sold. At a ground with a capacity of just under 16,000, fewer than 30,000 seats have been sold for the match as a whole, around half of which are for the third day on Saturday. For the television cameramen charged with picking out densely populated areas of the ground, it could be a challenging few days.
Now it would be interesting how Ashes 2009 gets the response from the English public & viewers worldwide on Television. If Ashes also fails to make its mark, Test Cricket is soon on verge of being extinct...

cricket is doomed. one day games are now as boring as we used to feel about test matches. the game is becoming a joke.

Very sad to read this news. But atleast People would be switched to the Match on Television. I think India is the only place where Test, T20, Oneday have full crowds.

@admin,I guess you had been to test matches in India. if not full there will be good number of crowds for Test matches 🙂

i have been to a couple of ranji matches long time back. cricket was pretty slow during those days.

I think last few test series in India also had very less crowds.Only few series like Ashes, Ind-Aus, Aus-SA, (may be Ind-Pak) attracts crowds for test matches. It seems people hardly care about test matches in Eng, WI, NZ, SL, and other smaller teams are playing.

stadiums in india usually suck. i wont want to be stuck in one without a decent loo for too long. 😀

Ok, forget about Indian stadium's quality, but as article is saying, even the traditional spectators of England are turning their back to test. This was the case in many other test playing nations. So tests no more seem to attract viewers.I guess Ind-Aus was the last series which drew large crowd (in Australia).

If I remember correctly.. The Ind-Aus match in Mohali.. School kids were called to watch the match as there were hardly any people to watch the match.. May be the day-night concept which ICC is bringing might help pull crowd for the test matches..

Atleast during the weekends in indian stadiums atleast 10000 people come and watch the test matches.......

Regarding the crowds we need to appreciate Australian crowds coming down to the ground when Australia play home series........
