Hi friends , I switched to aritel 256 Kbps from my local ISP to Airtel .

I never expected an ISP to block IRC . I dont believe in their Virus attack claim to block a common port like 6667 . I heard some techie ( he was incidentally the head of DSL ) say port 6668 is not blocked ( Is it posible that airtel atleast open this port for us ? ) . I did a http://www.pcflank.com , Advanced Port Scanner test and this is what it showed in my machine -> 6667 Stealthed and all others closed . This is absolutely pathetic and I cant think of a good explanation for doing such a menial and despecable act . Worldwide , almost every ISP provides IRC connectivity and IRC is one of the backbones of open source development . Why doesn't Airtel install the good security solutions rather than go around blocking ports ?

Airtel is doing nothing less than lowballing by claiming their connection is cheap at 999 Rs per month .The net effect is that their users cant do no downloads and just use the Web and Email which means they get a higher profit margin . I am way too annoyed with this and thats the reason I thought we have to do something about this . The reality is that any ISP that offers no such restriction is better than a 256 Kbps Airtel connection in terms of effective usage .

You cant call it a broadband without IRC .

I havent tested torrents till now and I use Azureus client on my Linux machine . How good is the speed if at all you are getting connected ? Do you get the Max speeds ? Does other p2p's work ?

Can someone tell me and other what do about this ?

What about all the grieved customers writing a mass petition ?

Hope you guys help us out to create a better connected India

Thanks
Max

Hi,

If you know of any good IRC channels to download stuff, please contact me at owjyhksfbhcix@mailinator.com . I couldn't PM you because you have too few posts to use the PM feature.

are you from bangalore?

Me or the Mighty Gladiator ?

the guy with the IRC problems. prathapml is on airtel from bangalore and i believe his IRC is blocked too. mine is working.

Hi , I got mirc working . I am from Cochin . Airtel seems to have opened the "closed ports" ( Not the ones blacklisted , but the ones that were inactive ) The fix is to use port number other than 6667 as used default in mirc . You can connect to undernet using 6668 ...'/server irc.undernet.org 6668' is how you do that for freenode -> use port 7000 and for other servers try out , there are ports in range 6660-7000 that might work. Please pass it on to ur friends .As for downloading , irc.ircsuper.net is where I get music , channel #desi-mp3 I guess , u have to figure it out and dude please use searchirc.com to find what you wanna download .CheersMaximus

Very sorry to be offtopic, thegladiator, how's airtel at cochin? speed and stuff?

hi leomax ,speed doesnt seem to be a big problem , they are givin good speeds . 60Kbps in 64 kbps line so far , but the plan change is taking some time ...as i migrated to the new plan...its worth it if you wanna switch over ...maximus

In Bangalore not had any probs with IRC to date.Everything a steady 25KB/s regardless of time.

Airtel seems to have opened the "closed ports"[/b]

lol .. the closed ports in pc flank's or whatever test u took means that they are open by ur isp but is shown closed bcoz no app on ur pc's using that port .. so actually that ports are kept open by us isp . all the ports shown as "closed" can be used . Besides many irc servers allow secure connections at port 9999 .. try to connect to that tooo .

I have a connection in Bangalore , and IRC is fine here. . But 2 of my friends from Mangalore ( in Karnataka ) are unable to connect to IRC from the last 4-5 months. I dont think they have tried connecting to port 6668, but will tell them to try that out too.
