I am a fan of Michael Schumacher. Well... I am in the worst place than all of you.

Ya, he won because Djokovic was not there (lost in 2nd round) and Nadal was not there. (injured)

He got lucky!

Yey!

This is the FRONT article on official ATP site:

Could Federer Be Headed Back To No. 1? - Tennis - ATP World Tour

Its trying to convey exactly same thing which I tried just few days back. That this year he has improved a lot.

Don't look now, but suddenly Roger Federer is making a charge towards returning to World No. 1.

As improbable as that seemed at the start of the season, should Federer win the US Open, and Novak Djokovic not progress beyond the semi-finals, the Swiss would move into first place in the Emirates ATP Race To London.

Win in US open and Djokovic failing to reach FINAL will mean Federer will be no. 1 in race to london (not in ranking).

If that happens, ofcourse people will say he got lucky again that Djokovic lost on or before semifinal!

Note:
Race to london means performance this year
Ranking is performance based on last 52 weeks.

Its a fact that Federer is one of the greatest and currently a top four player. It's a fact that Nadal's body is past his prime (which was foreseen due to his style of game). Also it seems that Novak can not keep up his form as consistently as he has been doing for the past couple of years. And Federer is playing well better. But still my prediction for the last grand slam of the year is that most probably Federer will not win it. At his age besides physical aspect, mental fatigue plays a major part. And if you look at past grand slam matches of Federer you will see that he did not have the crucial intensity required for grand slam final and semi final matches.
Re Nadal vs Federer, against Nadal Federer has always lost matches by shanking points. Nadal beats Federer even in Federer's dreams.

Also Federer's ascendency coincides with Novak losing his stupendous form. It would have been great, had Federer been able to stop Novak when Novak was in his full flow?
By the way I consider Novak's run when he was undefeatable as the best any player had ever played in the past 35 years. Nobody even Sampras, Federer or Nadal at their best played better than Novak.

GOAT should NEVER be decided by head-to-head against one single player.

There is a reason Federer loses to Nadal. Federer has attacking style plus all the SHOTS and styles.

Nadal does not have all shots and styles but his ROCK SOLID defense makes up for it. He can wear down any player just by simply defending and waiting for opponent to make mistake. (If you see his many UNEXPECTED loses in grandslam were because his defence was over powered - Tsonga in Aus open, Soderling in French open then recent two losses in Wimbledon against 100 ranked players)

Nadal's defense and his one weapon (forehand crosscourt topspin) goes easily against Federer's weakness - Federer's backhand.

So Nadal always uses his topspins to Federer's backhand which jumps on Federer's single handed backhand.

Compare the same with Djokovic. Djokovic has great backhand and that is why Nadal can not beat Djokovic as convincingly. (There was article explaining why Nadal's topspin is not working against Djokovic)

But contrarily Federer can still match Djokovic even at age of 33 (2-2 head-to-head this year with 5 set tough Wimbledon final)

Not taking anything away from Nadal though. Federer v/s Nadal - yes Nadal knocks him down. But that does not mean Nadal becomes GOAT!

He will drop out of TOP 10 at the end of the year.

Which means comeback will be tougher as he may face Top 5 players in 3rd or 4th round of grandslam.

And age of 35 - he probably would not be able to beat them.

Probably his chance of winning a grandslam are now gone forever.
