Sunil Mittal’s Bharti has announced their plans to enter the “Internet Protocol TV” (IPTV) segment in India, which would see television content delivered through telephone lines! They have collaborated with tech giants UTStarcom for this ambitious venture, which should put them in a market with no players in the Indian broadband scenario.

well, there were news regarding the same from MTNL as well...any idea what happened to that???

Heh, is this ?Internet Protocol TV? (IPTV) the same as plain jane cable TV.Cept it's over a telephone line instead.Hmm, now that i think about it, no more dangling f-ugly cables strewn over the place..Oh wait...only if Airtel gets permission to dig.oN the other hand i cant wait to replace my cable tv operator, sometimes i lose signals and have to stare at static on the screen. Now if Airtel can manage to give me as good a TV experience as internet, i might be sold on this IPTV thing.

i think airtel has finally gotten permission to dig in our area! We will finally have TV, landline, DSL all rolled into one! 😀

DOnt expect a lot from AIrtel. 😛h34r:

dont believe on miracles....rely on them....uum...how abt a 512 kbps for 600/month with unlimited usage.🙂 & ofc a good DSL router with latest drivers.🙂

Im pretty disappointed after waiting for months airtel came to my place ,now they're telling they wont give standalone bb here,u have to take the phone with it ,so 128k ultd is like 660+250 (onsidering min phone rental) ,which is vsnl's tariff.

Two days back i read in the Hindu that Chennai based SUN TV is planning to enter the broadband business in a big way as they have already the largest cable network in the city. how is it? B)

I've heard, this IPTV would be like CAS, ie for each TV in your house, you have to take a seprate connection. Also it may also turn out to be expensive than the current Cable TV as you have to purchase individual channels(though it may be good for some people).

trials are already ON in gurgaon, a known is in the selected list and looks good. though the made in china tag remains! For TVoIP they are replacing the modems, with ADSL2+ routers......the one I saw was from UTStarcom and so was the Set top box.DSL Line----DSL router------PC +-----------Set top box (w/remote)------TVVoD is avaiable with all the basic feature set (bookmarks, instant payment)......... now the game is set to rolll between the cablewala and the telcos!Pricing structure is still not disclosed or undecided...due date of launch is around April 2k6
