Hi.I am new here, live in Chandigarh and am currently on Sify 256 kbps night unlimited connection. As you might have guessed, I am pretty pissed off with Sify's service and have decided to take up Airtel BroadBand. But so as to not repeat my mistake as with the case of sify, I have a few doubts which I would like you guys to clear before I go with airtel.I called Airtel and they sent over an executive who gave me the follwing information:Economy Combo @ 256 kbps.Day: 10 hrs per month.Night: UnlimitedPrice: Rs. 550 (+Rs. 99 for modem rental per month)Now in the brochure he showed me the Night hrs were listed as 50 whereas he said they have now changed to unlimited. Also the night time surfing hrs were listed as 10:30 pm to 6:30 am whereas he said that these were now changed to 9 pm to 8 am. I am pretty confused and dont want to be taken for a ride. So what exactly is it?Now assuming that they offer unlimited night browsing and the night time is 9 pm to 8 am as said be the airtel guy, I have a few more questions:1. Since the daytime usage is only 10 hrs per month, can I see the daytime surfing in my airtel account or do I have to keep the record of the hrs surfed during the day on my own??2. Does airtel use special logging in software or does windows do the job?3. What are the speeds on the 256 kbps connection? Both download and upload? Can I get simultaneous 256 kbps (or 32 KBps) upload and download simultaneously?4. Is the service of airtel good in chandigarh?5. Is there a way to logout automatically at 8 am in the morning so as to save my precious daytime usage hrs?6. Which modem to use? USB or ethernet? I am not going to be connected all the time and would like to log on and log off. Also I hve two PCs, a desktop and a laptop. So would like some mobility also.7. Will I get a static or dynamic IP? I would like a dynamic one.8. Ummm....really cant think of more at the moment, will edit this post if I come up with more. Thanks for your time for reading this looong post and I would really appreciate if someone comes up with answers.

A seriously good choice my friend ....

I am not really sure about the tarriffs in c'garh, better check up Airtel's site for that.

Now coming to your queries i'll try to clarify as much as i can :

1. I guess there is a site which tracks your dsl usage ... I really haven't seen my logs because i have an unlimited package ... but yes they do keep records which can be viewed by the user.

2. No Airtel does not use any special logging software .... not that i knw of 😛

3. The package states speeds upto 256Kbps so you're not guaranteed speeds of 32KBps constantly but the speeds are pretty decent ... I get 25-28 KBps average even at peak hours ... Also for any DSL connection simultaneous up and down at max speed can choke up your line so if u're uploading at max speed then your download speed is affected..

4. Don't have a clue about this but in Delhi and NCR its really good ... An example to prove my point : I fried my yozan modem couple of months back so i called up the customer care and they told me that a technical guy would come to my place within 48 hours. Within a couple of hours a rep showed up at my place and replaced the modem.
About the service overall i am pretty impressed by the extremely low downtimes.

5. I guess there are softwares to do that

6. I have only used the ethernet modem uptil now so i can't say but i guess some people using the USB modem had some trouble with it so i think someone who has used both could help you out with this.

7. Dynamic IP's only. For static you gotta shell out some extra dough.

8. No problemo .

Thanks a ton dude. One question though, regarding question no. 2. by your reply it seems that you are saying that they dont keep logs of your activities. Actually I was not asking about that. What I wanted to ask was that do we have to use some special dialer of airtel or we can login using windows based connections??

No special dialer required if you don't need to run a server. I have the ethernet yozan as well, the USB i had probs before with dodgy drivers so dont use it.When i say you don't run a server, meaning you wont be setting a web server etc. If you want to do that then you would connect in something called bridging mode where a driver of sorts is required.so to answer your question no shitty login client etc just connect up as if its a LAN conection.I have been with Airtel for 6 months now, and the difference is night & day compared to my last ISP. You are indeed lucky if you can get them in your area.

All that is done is a PPPoE connection is established .... No dialers and no bugging softwares ... You can configure the modem to automatically login you as soon as you turn it on or you can setup a connection in such a way that you have to dial in each time you want to logon (as you are planning to take an hour based plan i would suggest the latter) i.e. you setup your modem as a bridge and then dial in to logon to your connection.... When you are done disconnect the connection. 😛

Hop on man u'll defi love airtel ....

Can I get a wireless router to work as a modem instead of using the airtel modem? I asked and the local hardware store said they were selling wireless routers (11 mbps) for around Rs. 1500. I asked and he said that it can be used for ADSL.

There are devices that can do Job of Wireless (WiFi) and ADSL modem. But those normally cost 5k+.
