Hi,I live in Ahmedabad and I took Sify a couple of weeks ago and am satisfied with it. the speed is not very much faster than dial up but then I took the 64kbps connection and so I wasn’t expecting very high speed anyway. However, some days ago I had the problem that my computer kept giving me the message it was infected by a Trojan horse. My tech came, uninstalled my AVG antivirus, installed his Trend Micro and ran it and after that I have not had any message informing me of a Trojan horse. But yesterday, Sify rang up and told me they could see my computer had viruses and they told me to unplug their cable and run a virus check because if I didn’t unplug the cable first, the virus would still remain in the computer and would affect them or other users; he wasn’t very clear which. My question is: is it possible that if I continue to use Sify, my computer will keep getting viruses? Is it possible that I may get viruses from the other computers in my area that share the same Sify connection? After all, if my virus could affect others, then it stands to reason that viruses other computers get would be transmitted to my computer. Or am I wrong and there is no way I could get a virus from another computer because we share the same Sify connection?I don’t visit many sites on the net and don’t download music, films, or anything much. So I don’t think I should be at a large risk for viruses.I need to know whether continued use of Sify will result in increased risk of viruses. my term will end in a couple of weeks and so I will have to decide whether to continue with Sify or take something else. Should I go for bsnl broadband? Has anyone here tried bsnl and if so, what were the results? Did you get viruses because of bsnl?I would prefer to continue with Sify because as I said, I am quite satisfied with it. It has been down only twice so far and for a short time. otherwise it gives me consistent service. But I’m worried about the virus problem and so need to know whether or not Sify is increasing my exposure to viruses. Is it that any cable connection would allow more viruses in than any broadband you get through the phone? I have been told that viruses come more frequently through cable than any other connection. But I was also told the faster your connection, the more easily a virus can get through and as I said, my Sify connection can hardly be called fast. Thanks in advance for your reply.

well u havent mentioned your OS and system info

since u dont vsit weird mp3 sites
im guessing its possibley a network worm...u may have been infected by a worm...which might have dropped a trojan...or even a scrpt kiddee trying to sub7 u!

Sify is not to blame! these problems can be on every isp...bsnl and triabnd and safer as the router can be a firewall...but that doesnt mean sify sux! (actually it does...but thats not the point)

i advise u apply the critical patches and clean you system...with a shiny new Updated AntiVirus!

well thats because u cant trust ppl on your lan!
i advise u diable Netbios,also apply Lsass/RPC DCom/PnP Vulnerablity patches...(incase u have winXP,2k,etc)

or better yet lets call it a new year and GET ZONEALARM Firewall!

plz also metion your OS,the name of the virus/trojan!

Any1 else wants to add something?? or flame me??

i can give u examples?? what about typhiod marys? nasty mutations often happen unknowingly/willingly...eg...W32\Cabanas\Canabas .... it is a perprocess resident virus...if it infects a worm (say mydoom) and mydoom starts spreading.... every copy that mydoom makes of itself will have cabanas in it! nice eh?also the incident Qaz trojan ......it was dropped bythe worm, a mass mailer...caused lots of prblems as qaz modifies the system files to allow access privileges to every member!...left wide open doors to coperate networks!more eg? "Funlove + Opaserv" ...this one kicked ass!intersting? i thought not!?

why a trojan cleaner? just get an AV! its do just fine!if u know the name of the trojan that infected ur comp....then u can just research its filenames from the net...and get to "frag-the-freakin-trojan"mode! 🙂 if u want help...post ur queries here!Mcafee is good! NORTON is BETTER!have it updated! (i have said that 738256 times and still counting...🙂)

Thanks so much for your reply. I’m sorry i couldn’t reply sooner. My tech came and reformatted my computer and then when i went on the net, my sify account expired. I’m using dial up for now till i get some broadband, probably bsnl.

I have Win XP. The tech installed Norton Anti-virus when he reformatted and he told me this has a firewall which will give added safety and so there was no need to get Zonealarm Firewall.

He also said when he saw my computer, he saw various other computers in the neighborhood show up on my comp. He’s saying that the computers in my area are on a local network. So he said yes, cable means i can get viruses from other computers in the neighborhood. He also said BSNL is safer and he has many customers who take bsnl and they don’t have too many virus problems.

However,a friend of mine said that bsnl also connects to various computers, and all those are connected to the area office. So, again, i can get viruses from other computers. He suggested, “You might ask the cable/DSL guy if you could install a cable/DSL router and thereby block the connection. There might be an inexpensive one in India, one that simply isolates your computer and doesn’t have a built in active firewall. It might not be more expensive than the DSL router, or that router might be a cable/DSL router to start with. But ask a specific question. Tell him you want your computer isolated from the other computers on the cable...

Did a little checking. You would need a router in addition to the modem, whether DSL or cable. The router with the built-in firewall would probably not be cheap (would be like the one I referred to). The modem would not offer protection.”

****
I don’t know if i can ask the bsnl people to do stuff like this or whether it would work to protect me from other computers. If it works, maybe i can renew Sify? Though now i distrust cable, after my tech said the risk of viruses was greater with cable.

But i now also fear bsnl after hearing the possibility i can get viruses from other computers that way too.

hmmm...if ur connect to the internet without firewall and AV..u are going to get infected..no matter which ISP u use

reformatting was never required!! dont be scared of virii's...they are just like microsoft programs...only they dont crash! 🙂

Sify is not cable internet never mind the marketing gimmick tag sify has decided to give itself. Don't worry, using a good firewall like zone alarm/norton and regularling updating your Antivirus and your operating system and regularly scanning with the antivirus will make you safe on Sify, nothing else is required.

oh well use stole's idea and get Zone Alarm security suite which includes a rock stable anti virus & firewall 😛

you dont need to visit such sites to get a virus / worm / trojan and stuff. if anyone on your LAN is infected, its more than sufficient!

yea in vashi lan of sify ...there r many virus which infect the pcs very easily....and the antivirus given by sify is not that secure also..........
