at present only two player are having their own gateways and fully functional to handle greater bandwidth. one is BSNL and the other is Barathi Telecom (Airtel), having landline network.  Rest of them buy the bandwidth from these. i am told reliance is not interested for some more years to come.  Airtel is consistently in this business and has no intention of diversifying into other areas. we can rely on them for best service.

actually, bharti has more probability of leaving telecom field than any other player in the market. the entry of vodafone made us a little more confident.

Well i'm on Airtel's 256k, i rarely see Opera tell me its pulling more than 19KB/s.On ftp downlaods i have touched speeds of maybe 25KB/s max. But then again, thats just a peak, the avg speed on a 256kbs line remains in the 18KBs or nearly 150kbs. And these are coming from boxes that can do 10Mbit.The latency on these connections aint great, for plain downlaoding it works, anything else, forget it.

^That's funny, coz you would expect http traffic to be cacheable and hence faster. Can you explain?

well i have been airtel for aroudn 12 months now. download managers and torrents give me speeds in excess of 25KBps. but surfing... never touches 20K.

airtel does not have fast browsing speeds. that is a fact proven.

I find this quite strange !!

Since most ppl that would sign up for their broadband service, would use the web for most things. Downloads are in the minority. Most ppl would roughly guage how fast their service is by how fast a web page appears..not scientific mind you but quite pervasive. SO usually most ISPs prioritise HTTP traffic over anything else.

Having said that i'm not advocating they slow down downloads to make HTTP faster ...hehe.

Can you do me on thing? Can you ask whether this plan upgrade is for all over Tamil Nadu or issit only for Chennai? Well the Airtel guys here seems to be knowing nuthin about this plan change! They keep telling me that they got Unlimited 512kbps for 10,999 bucks a month!

So please thoufique can you enquire the customer care there and ask them whether this bandwidth upgrade is for all plans and all cities 🙂 or issit only for the lucky Chennai guys only? 🙁

Amuthan

this change is only with regard to connection speed. there are no new plans and changes in the tariff charges. the upgrading is effected all india basis, and that includes madurai too. you can dial to 044-42021914 and get confirmation yourself.

i am told during the Jan/Feb 06 new schemes will definitely be announced. my guess is that 128/256 unlimited will go and you will have 512 unlimited, 512 with celing upto 3gb and further mb at certain rates.

better wait.

thoufique, you are a damn lucky guy! 32KBps on a 256Kbps line is 100% of the promised bandwidth! 😀

hi ppl, i m new here , and was quite impressed to c such an elaborate discussion on BB in india. i m interested in getting a BB connection(256k UL) and after going through this forum i have found that airtel has the best service both in terms of quality and affordability.i live in PUNE, i dont know whether Airtel BB is available here or not??i have no idea where should i enquire about the availability.....plz help me out.

Now I'm pretty sure Airtel is up to something..coz' I'm experiencing frequent disconnectsand Most of the time my USB modem is in 'Trainig' mode..What are these guyz upto???and my connexion still is termed 'connected at 512.0kbps' and I'm only getting 128kbps still!

Yep I know that -- But this wasn't the case with Airtel BB until a week ago..
If I had 128kbps connexion - the green arrow thingie in the taskbar only used to tell 128/128 and not 512/512..
This is the sole purpose of this thread..
Why this new thing from airtel?
What I was trying to tell in my previous post was that today I'd experienced lots of disconnections here at Chennai, lots of time my DSL modem went into 'Training' mode - so it's probably some work going on at Airtel!
Hope it's all for the better! 😉

Checkout the forums carefully. There are several mentions of CC numbers of Airtel.
