Its country smaller then Mumbai/Delhi (In population)..... and they have done it

The Republic of Macedonia is a small country in Southern Europe with a population of around 2 million. Internet penetration is only around 5% and software piracy rate is rampant. Also, the government does not play any major role in the development of the ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) and a private sector is dominated by Microsoft technologies.

Given the circumstances, one would not expect any free software related stories to make the headlines. Yet the presence of a small volunteer organization by the name Free Software Macedonia is making a big difference in this small country.

At the time of writing this article, all major Free Open Source Software (FOSS) projects have either been translated or were close to being translated in Macedonian language. Tools such as spell checkers are also under development. Although, resources are scarce, dedication and enthusiasm has kept these projects going.

kudos! We must take a lesson from them! 😀

shhh... when u have professionals setting up your computers, i doubt u have to worry abt standardisation of hardware which might cause problems for your operating system.

@Prathapml: So you want school kids to pay Microsoft for Win XP??Dude! They are kids! Not geeks! Something thats slightly usable, and most of all FREE, should help them! You dont see Bill Gates going to Macedonia to promote their crap "Starter" Edition do you?

he just has a very strong opinion about certain things 😉

They should have used *BSD or Slackware 😉 😀 😀

They are not running servers! They are running desktops. Besides EdUbuntu is customized for educational institutions!

They should start running servers, at least that country will produce 1337 geeks. 😉

servers require networks which requires multiple computer users. a single individual has no need for server based computers. can we do logical discussions here?

netfreak, Whats the fixation with servers?! Dude, look at the state of Macedonia!

The choice of ubuntu intrinsically proves that those setting it up aren't professional.
