kernel panic : attempted kill init

dear friends i have a Microstar international PM82M V SERIES-1( MODEL MS-7071 V 1.X)m-atx mainboard based on via p4m800 and vt8327 R chipset with intel 2.66 ghz processor and 512 hynix RAM xp running fine after installing linux redhat 9 iget an error of kernel panic : attempted kill in it and system halts ,what may be the error about .i tried my hdd on other pc and linux works fine pls sujjest thanks in advance
 
at what point do you get this error ?
 
can you post all the text in the kernel panic - maybe something interesting in there.but, if i may ask, why use really really OLD redhat 9? why not try to obtain the latest releases like Fedora 9 (Fedora 10 coming soon) or Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 (or Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10 coming soon)...? these newer releases are less likely to have problem with hardware like VIA chipset motherboards...
