"YOU may not have a phone or a telephone line for accessing the Internet and still get high speed Internet using the power line reaching your home. The Government is formulating a policy to promote Broadband over Power Line as part of the New Telecom Policy 2005.

The Broadband over Power Line technology allows Internet data to be transmitted over utility power lines. To make use of Broadband over Power Line, subscribers use neither a phone, a cable nor a satellite connection. Instead, a subscriber installs a modem that plugs into an ordinary wall outlet and pays a subscription fee similar to those paid for other types of Internet service."

Could this be the solution to our broadband woes? As the articles mentions the technology is relatively new so it remains to be seen how efficient it is. I suppose it will also take a few years for the technology to take off by which time hopefully the current lot of services will be more affordable/reliable. Still this may be something to watch for in the future.

And it will take a few decads to get stable electricity connections

There isn't a question of distribution. The question is whether its feasible or not AND the question is whether or not these STUPID RETARDED ISPs will open up the international bandwidth to us!

Considering power cuts these days, i dont think many people will opt for such a thing. Condition of telephone lines is much better than condition of power lines.

Aren't power cuts because of inadequate generation of electricity rather than inadequate power lines? That said I don't know much about the relative quality of power lines and phone lines. I would imagine that there are many homes with electricity and no phone lines so this could be useful for them. And if it increases competition it could useful for all of us.

It would be an ideal distribution medium in Mumbai since powercuts are rare. But the problem is whether the Power companies would think this is a profitable business. Reliance which controls a major stake in the power business in Mumbai, already delivers internet through its Fiber Optic network, Rconnect and over the MAN (Powersurfer.net). I dont think they would want to install any more gateways and waste time digging roads to connect their powerstations to their internet gateways 😉
