Virtualisation technology is about to take one more step forward, if Sun's announcement that it plans to integrate Solaris containers for Linux applications bears fruit. The feature is, said Sun, designed to allow organisations to run Red Hat binaries unmodified in containers on the Sun OS by year end. Additionally, Sun has demonstrated virtual Solaris in a Xen wrapper.

yep, this is a big reality but at the same time, it will take up too much system resources. Yes, I have used Xen on my Linux machine. It's great but the problem is that it's a kernel level "hack" which opens up a wide variety of problems. If one OS fails it can take down the ENTIRE server which God knows how many "virtual" servers is running! 😕
 
This is really mostly for servers to host non-native apps.Sun == Server company
 
Yes, but similar things have been happening on desktop as well. CoLinux for running Linux on top of XP, Mac OS layer for running software written for G4 to run on Intel proc are examples.
