Hi all, I have applied for BSNL broadband and must be getting the connection in two days. But now i am in a dilemma of whether to go for wireless or normal. I have applied for a normal speed of 256kbps - 2mbps (500Rs Home package). My doubt is:1. Would taking a wireless modem for this package reduce my speed further?2. Is it possible for me to take wireless modem on a rental basis for few months and then change (or buy) a normal modem if i am unsatisfied?3. And my final question is a security issue. As we know its easy for our neighbours to encroach our bandwidth in case of wireless. So i want to know does BSNL wireless modem provide us a provision to accept data only from my system by setting the MAC address on the router? Please clarify. Thanks
 
Hello and Welcome to Broadband Forum.Here are the answers to all your questions:1. No, a wireless modem will not cause any decrese in your speed.2. Yes, it is surely possible.3. I have a ZTE wireless modem by BSNL, it has this facility and I think all other modems also have this facility.You can also use WEP.It is better because in it you have to enter a password while connecting wirelessly to the modem and you can connect any wireless device without much setting.
 
Thaks shantam. I have one more question.How do BSNL users generally connect to internet, in sify i use a sify client to login and only then my b/w usage would be tracked. Does BSNL have any similar client and provide uid/pwd?If NO, how do i stop my usage when i dont want to use internet? Does BSNL provide any provision to do this for normal and wireless router users?Thanks
 
1.Normally WIFI modem/router not required , if you don't use a laptop computer, and need to access Internet from all rooms in your house.
Or if you don't share the connection with more than one computer/laptops etc
Also If you don't set it up properly others can "steal" your connection !
Take on rental basis first.
2.YES. You have to select "bridged" mode in the WAN page of the modem.
You can use the Wanminiport dialer in your computer. UserID/PW not stored in modem.
Start/All programs/Accessories/communications/Network connection Wizard etc.

Para two : You will get a 14digit portal ID and password later ( say after a week) to check your usage details.
 
@above,Yes, you will have username/password ! you can either use dialer from your system or you can put the settings in router and internet will be ON when the Router is ON !It is always better to go modem on rental (initial months), and later you can buy it ! If you buy from bsnl, you get half of the rent reduced from original cost !
 
Yes you can use the WAN Miniport Dialer that is available woth Windows.The other option you have is to keep the modem in Always on Mode in this mode you will be charged as soon as you switch on your modem and there is no need for any dialer.
 

Thanks for the valuable info. It would be helpful if you can point me to some article or guide which tell how to setup my wireless router and my laptop to connect to this router(with WPA security), as i dont trust the BSNL guys who wuld come to do the same.
 
thanks for the info. I just came across something called BRIDGE MODE. In this mode i can connect only one laptop to my router is what i read. My requirement is to have a wireless connectivity at my home (and i am the only one using it) and with complete security. So, i have following questions:1. In reference to my req, Is setting my wireless modem in BRIDGE MODE better than PPPoE. Please suggest2. Can i still use WPA security if i switch to bridge mode.3. Does BSNL provide any guide to setup in this mode for different routers?4. In BRIDGE MODE would my uid/pwd get stored in the router? If no then how do i connect to internet?

1. For safety all users who dont have unlimited connections are recommended to use Bridged Mode.

2.Yes you can still use that.

4. No it is not stored in router.If you use WPA also then first you will connect to the router wirelessly using the password set for WPA, once this is done you will use the dialer in which you will enter your broadband useername and password and after that, it will get connected.
 
BSNL guys say they are having dearth in modems. They indirectly suggested to me to buy a modem of my own. So now i am having these doubts: Since i am looking for wireless connectivity, i dont want to buy ADSL modem and Router seperately. Please suggest me a modem (ADSL modem + Wireless Router) which BSNL suppports in case any issues come later. One more question, if i ask the BSNL guys for Wireless connectivity do they provide me ADSL modem and Wireless router seperately? Does that charge me extra!!!Please suggest
 
Go to SJP/SP Road (computer market) near Corporation circle-Market, and ask for ADSL router in different shops... You will get the best price over there.. Ask for D-Link/Netgear/Linksys ! If you ask bsnl people for providing wireless, they give ADSL wireless router itself. they wont give two equipments ! When you buy, make sure it is ADSL Wireless router, not just a wireless router !
 
Linksys WAG200G looks a good ADSL Modem Cum router.If you are buying a router from outside make sure you alwaus buy an ADSL Modem Cum Router and Not only an ADSL Router.Look for routers from Linksys, D-Link, Netgear.If you buy from BSNL they will give you an ADSL Modem Cum Router and not an ADSL modem and a router separately.Good Luck Hope you Find a Good Router.:thumbsup:
