the speeds are slowing down badly in BSNL dataone.Iam having the same problem 300kbps download & 40kbps upload (home1800 plan) anytime I check since Ist week May 2008.All modem & line conditions are fine.I was getting around 1500kbps down & 256kbps up anytime for one year untill May 2008.
Took the matter upto NIB 1,they couldn't help.Wrote to DGM(NS) who has a negative attitude. He replied that BSNL can assure speed only upto their Indian gateways(not international sites).Telling him that we needed their service to connect to internet sites(98% of them located out of India) did not help as he said that is not what they promised.
Digging deep & spending lots of time with NIB I came to know some things as follows:

All the info regarding contention ratio and network has been given by the DGM (NS) Bangalore - Mr.VERMA .

1. Contention ratio is 50:1

2. BSNL network is over crowded with traffic due to increased users, but the international gateways & routers are not increased. No one knows when they will increase. Not even the DGM (NS) Mr.Verma is aware of it.

3. Being such a huge company,it does not have it's own internet uplinking capacity, they depend on others like VSNL,etc who are giving priority to their own customers & also there is no one to question from BSNL about why they are not given proper uplinking service by their vendors.

4. They have reduced the number of channels to 1 allotted to BB service to accomodate other services like IPTV,video streaming, gaming etc these are eatingup the BB network too.

5. They strongly believe that if they provide you with the minimum download speed as promised in your plan, their job is done.

The only other way is for all of you to keep emailing to PGM,DGM(NS),DE(NOC) etc etc every two days so that they understand how many customers are having this slow speed problem. BSNL staff and officers will tell every cusotmer that theirs is an isolated case & generally all other customers are getting proper speed :wall:

@/stormshadow/Mention the modem you are using and report SNR/ATTN/MOD/ and selected line speed. Test speed at speedtest. net say mumbai server and post link. I had posted my speed in your other post. Let us check up your system and see if any improvement possible. In HOME1800 min 512Kbps is promised which means 64KB/sec.Do You need 10GB for day usage. ? and how many computer/s you use on this connection ?

Yep i too saw about this increase in contention ratio in another forum. Earlier it was 40:1 (actually back in 2005 it was 20:1) 🙁

with a 50:1 contention ratio (overbooking ratio)..whatever the network quality be, for a 2 mbps line this high ratio will spoil the fun in broadband.the terrestrial DSL networks for home use are desigend for contention ratios of 20:1 or 25:1 . but here BSNL is abusing the network for the majority of users who have 2 mbps bb by sharing the 2mbps line with 49 others. The system usually works without problems but relies on users making reasonable traffic demands on the network. If a user is a heavy downloader, he will eat into the other users’ bandwidth. So even if there are 5 heavy downloaders..the overall network speed is back to dialup speeds. :wall:

thanks for the concern. b/w i have been using bsnl bb for some years now. So i have a fair knowledge regarding the values.

when u test the speeds normally , it is ideal to test with a server that is located in US,Cannada, UK, Europe or HK. Checking with a server in India u can only check whtether the local network is ok or not and that malware or spyware are not affecting the download speeds. No point in checking with a server that is in India since we browse 98% of sites outside India using the international gateway.

since the DGM NS of bangalore is himself unware of when the bandwidth/international gateway will be updated and until the high overbooking ratio (contention ratio) is reduced..we home users of BSNL broadband are in for a torrid time. 😢

btw this info is there in BSNL FAQ now (or was there for long time)

What is contention or a contention ratio? To provide a cost effective service - all ADSL services are contended (shared). These contention ratios are applied in the backbone and international part of the network. A commonly applied contention rate is 50 : 1. All customers are guaranteed the plan rate up to the local exchange or the ADSL equipment to which they are connected. On the shared part of the network a 50:1 contention ratio would mean that a 2 Mbps connection would be shared by 49 others. In reality this is very unlikely to happen and the customer would find the connection much faster than dial-up modems. ADSL relies on individual users not making unreasonable traffic demands on the network to provide fast access speeds for all. If you are not getting the speed you expect, it can be due to the contention ratio but also to many other factors including the congestion at the remote site you are accessing.

every ISP have a contention ratio.. but BSNL has a 50:1 ratio 🙁 which shows BSNL can can saturate the network when there is a insuffecient international bandwidth.

So their lapse in upgradation of international bandwidth will cost the customer.

time customers wrote to the cmd of bsnl about this.
I have sent a letter ..I request the forum members to do likewise regarding the unresolved problems.

"connection much faster than dial-up modems" .... lol ! means 56x2 = 128 kbps is much faster 😛

what is the IT minister doing??:madness:😡
Does that IT minister/Neta knows ...
What is internet/broadband/connection ratio/etc ... ?
I doubt ...
Yes at max he might be knowing internet .... Means where he can watch xxx stuff 😡:wall::madness:

Well said. BSNL going bad day by day. I got download speed of 4.3k in the free hours (not 43K) :wall:
