Bsnl BroadBand usages

I want to know is there anymeans or software from which I can know the excat no.s of uploaded and downloaded bytes while surfing the internet under BSNL braod band.I find that though I stop surfing when Broad band connection is on status shows and go on adding bytes received even though I stop surfing and do not open any website. I am not in a position to know how this happens.Will some pl advise and guide me.Thanks
