How to get 512kbps - A Guide?

Hmm after disconecting my connection every 12 hours to see if I've become one of those users whos been getting "upgraded" to 512kbps and cursing a lot of people everytime it connects at 288kbps, I sacrificed my teddy bear and said a few chants. To get to the point I was reading of one the latest posts here and one chap mentioned that his modem was configured to connect at 320kbps and it was getting 35-40k dl speeds. That got me thinking. What if everyone had been bumped up somehow to the higher speeds but because a whole bunch of them were configured at 288kbps they were not able to get the higher speeds? Especially since I noticed some of the users getting the higer speeds were one who had just got new Airtel BB connections. So If anyone knows how to configure the connection speed of the modems maybe they could post a guide here?BTW I have a Lucent 20A-USB modem which I had bought in Dubai earlier when I used to stay there. Thing is I remember even though I had a 256kbps connection there when ever I connected it would show my connection as 8Mbps. I've been poking around it in Control Panel but can't figure out how to change the connection speed.PS. Posters try not to post in this thread about how they "wish they had 512kbps, cursing Airtel, dreaming about actual broadband" etc etc

To solve my ping problems airtel bumped uped my connection speed up to 672 kbps but i still dont get anuthing above 17k ( i am on 128k ) , so i dont think this is the problem , i think the trick lies somewhere else. 🙁

haha this is hilarious... "how to get 512k"? whats the trick?how about signing up and paying for a 512k plan, such as BSNL's Home 1800... they have been offering this to you since Jan this year! Its that simple!or you could wait for airtel to announce 512k plans... im hoping they announce 512kbps, unlimited at Rs 2000/- per month (or less) hehe

Umm...people. It doesnt matter if your ADSL 2+ modem is configured for 8Mbps. It's the ISP's server which shapes your speeds. So if the server thinks you have a 512Kbps connection, you get a 512Kbps connection. It doesnt matter if the modem says that you have a 8Mbps connection... Get it?

if u can see max , then when u connect to airtel u get suscribed to 512kbps , but i get to 672 to sort out my latency programs, now what has happened is that some ppl have been uncaped( or so to say) , which happened earlier also for like 6 months 🙂 , was just wondering if it was the same thingie 🙂..Guys on 512 enlightin us L)

i know latency doesnt depend upon bandwitdh , it depends on routing 😛My bandwidth was gettin choked due to large numebr of subscribers, so they bumped up my total allocated bandwidth. 🙂

You are being silly here people! If the ISPs would've set the speed limits on the modems then they would've long been hacked to get the max speed i.e. 8Mbps. But this isn't the case. Trust me, the speed limit is set on the server and not on the modem.

The speed limit is both on the server aswell as the modem, the maximum speed that you can get on a usb modem is 320 kbps.

Look I know my way around DSL a bit and I wasn't insinuating that we do somethign to "Uncap" or Spoof our MAC address etc like its possible to do on a Cable Modem. All I said was if their servers have screwed up and have given them 512kbps speeds I postualted that maybe we were all getting 512kbps speeds but since our modems were configured to to connect at 288kbps, then if there was away to change the config on the client side to connect at 512kbps we would see the same speed increases. Also I the modem used to show 8mbps when I was in Duabi not over here. I'm aware that is the max for the ADSL2+ and it used to just show the max available up/down stream the Modem could handle.Over here it shows 288kbps.Just so you know most ADSL modems can handle 8mbit its just that the ISP is limiting the speed. This only came to my mind since someone getting higher speeds mentioned that their Modem was configued to connect at 320kbps even though he was on a 256Unlimited plan.Hope this clears things up.Happy Diwali and Eid Mubarak!Peace out!

Lolz, i'm still getting 50 plus with many of other users in gurgaon also getting the same. i think you guys should call airtel custom care and ask them wat's going on 😉
