Less speed in BSNL FTTH

Those are just theoretical USB speeds. On top of that you have Wireless link speed which again is theoretical speeds. Basically all you get at the end is 50-70 Mbps on 2.4 GHz if you have a good line of sight with router unless you go for high end antenna stuff

i was more or less talking about getting a ac usb wifi device. if the op does want faster than 50mbps speeds on the old laptop. assuming that usb adapter would allow faster than 50mbps speeds.

Don't get it messed up bro.
USB standard support 480 Mbps does not mean that it will be the minimum throughput.
It is just that,we can send 480 Mbps across USB.
IT WILL NOT NECESSARILY PUSH THE WIFI ADAPTER TO SEND 480 Mbps data or receive it.
It is like a German highway, but Maruti 800 would not run at 300KMPH juust because it's German highway.
I meant that if the USB link speed is 480 Mbps, you must get at least 200 Mbps full speed from broadband via the WiFi dongle if the dongle supports the same.

Change your channel width in from 20mhz to 40mhz, this will give a speed of 150/150 Mbps from 2.4ghz.

It depends on location. If 2.4G is congested with many devices, then it will give bad performance due to overlapping
